Duolithe

Erebe

When I imagine the future of Metal, sure, the classical styles will always be there. But this sound is what will occupy the fringes. It’s a kaleidoscopic journey through sound, where boundaries dissolve and styles bleed into one another with both chaos and purpose. “Doulithe” is an album for those who crave surprise, who find joy in dissonance and beauty in contradiction. It is a triumph of experimentation—a record that doesn’t ask for your understanding, only your surrender.

From Bandcamp, “In “Duolithe,” EREBE chart new territory with an ambitious two-track EP that straddles the lines between progressive post-metal, experimental electronics, and brooding, folk-infused textures. A seamless fusion of influences – from the crushing weight of CULT OF LUNA to the intricacy of OPETH and the contemplative atmosphere of KARNIVOOL – this release marks both a refinement and an expansion of the French collective’s sonic formula. “Duolithe” is not merely a prelude to EREBE’s upcoming second full-length – it stands as a statement in its own right. The EP channels a wide range of emotional and philosophical undercurrents, exploring themes of solitude, identity, and the unrelenting passage of time.

“Avalanche” is the first song. The contrast in sounds is immediate. At the top, you have these almost jovial keyboards notes, and at the bottom, the weighted thud of a fuzzy riff and bass guitar notes. The vocals ease in innocuously, and there is dissonance present. From there, both the intricacies and the contrast grows, and I find myself asking, “what am I listening to?” They jump from a melodic passage to a heavy one and back and forth without a warning, and their musicianship is noteworthy. “Carved in Stone” is the other offering on the album. It begins with acoustic guitars, and some psychedlica. The vocals rise to pure rage, over a bed of smooth, warm, and inviting tones. At times, it’s hard to know where the sound is even headed.
