Iron Age
Primal

When I got offered to review a new release by PRIMAL, I didn’t have to think long and hard about whether I should do it. I reviewed the latest album “Humachine” by PRIMAL and awarded it a 7 out of 10 because I thought it was rather good, but not exceptional. I really wanted to hear if the band has progressed in comparison to that album. “Humachine” happened to be their sophomore album, their debut one being “Primal” from 2016. That was already two years ago and now the band of ex-HIRAX guitarist Glenn Rogers and ex-V8 vocalist Alberto Zamarbide is back with a kind of EP followed by a compilation album. The name “Iron Age” is well chosen, because this is good old fashioned Heavy Metal with a contemporary feel and of course some Thrashy undertones.
Ther thing I didn’t touch in that other review is the fact that singer Alberto Zamarbide has left a very successful career in his native country Argentina to pursue one in the USA. He was the frontman for the rather well known bands V8 and LOGOS. Well, I feel that he has done the right thing, as his vocals fit what PRIMAL does down to a T. let me start by telling you that the new songs “Iron Age” and “Mirror” show that PRIMAL as a band is still improving. The sound is full and competent, giving you the kind of vibe that will have you banging your head all through these two songs. About the rest of the EP, the compilation part; what I also like is the fact that PRIMAL has added a Spanish version of “End Times”, which will undoubtedly appeal to the Argentinian fans of Alberto Zamarbide. And yes, it is therefore also very apt that the band has added the V8 cover “Cautivos Del Sistema”, which was on the debut album of PRIMAL.
But what more can I say about this release? I can tell you that if you are a Bonafide Heavy Metal lover you will really like what “Iron Age” has to offer you. I hope it will push you into trying to find earlier exploits by the band. I can also say that HIRAX fans will have to give this a good listen, because this stands very far from the almost chaotic Thrash Metal/Crossover sounds that HIRAX produces. My personal take on all of this is that PRIMAL is a very good band that makes very pleasant Heavy Metal music. nothing more, nothing less. But hey, sometimes that is all one needs. And as I am really only rating two songs, I will award the same rating as last time. Only fair, I think. A new and full studio album will help in giving me more insight. Oh, as there is no vidio for the two new songs, I chose the title track of their latest album.
