BLACK MAJESTY is a bunch of Aussies from Melbourne, Victoria and they have been around since 2001. I am about to review “Oceans Of Black”, which actually is their eighth studio album filled with slightly Epic but surely Melodic Power Metal to date. They also have an EP (“Sands Of Time” from 2002) and a compilation album (“The 10 Years Of Royal Collection” from 2018) to their name. an as you bare almost expecting from me, I haven’t heard anything of that amount of music before now. Does that make me sad? No, as I don’t suffer from YOMO anymore. I used to, but since the late nineties it has become more difficult or should I say impossible to keep up with the vast number of releases.

Even after listening to “Oceans Of Black” a few times I can honestly say that I have not really missed out by not hearing BLACK MAJESTY up and until now. And before you start assuming; I like what I hear. Musically the band knows what they are doing, have their affairs in order and are able to construct an hour of rather pleasant sounding and very acceptable Power Metal. As is the norm in the current market, they are not carving out any new paths, but are following already trodden pathways that have proven to be quite easy to adhere to. So, there is nothing new under the sun to be found on “Oceans Of Black”, but BLACK MAJESTY has found a way to make sure you will like what you hear.

This is the point in the review that I will usually criticize the vocalist, but although he isn’t the most exciting singer on the planet, I have to say that John Cavaliere is doing quite a good job on “Oceans Of Black”. He knows his limitations, and within those boundaries he is making sure that what he lets come out of his mouth actually fits the music. I know that Power Metal is not my most favoured musical genre to listen to, but I have enjoyed listening to BLACK MAJESTY. If you are one of those who loves your Epic and Melodic parts to be part of it, I feel that I just might have handed you another jewel in your crown. And hey, maybe you are one of those who already knew and appreciated BLACK MAJESTY. If you are, you will definitely enjoy “Oceans Of Black”.
