Where Light Fears to Descend
Crust

From Bandcamp, "Where Light Fears to Descend" brings together doom and solitude merge. With memorable melodies, heavy riffs, and lyrics that explore deep questions, this album pushes the boundaries of post-black metal. The songs deal with themes of life's meaning, the cycle of death and rebirth, and the weight of human suffering. From frozen remains to the collapse of the world, each track adds another chapter to a story of change, despair, and brief moments of hope.” The album has nine songs, and “Soul-Grinding Abyss” is first. It comes out of the gates with a dark tension, and the harsh vocals have a poisonous bite. The music is dark, brooding, and aggressive at times. “Coffin Sodomy” has clearer edges, and a semi-thrashy sound. The riff plods along among the harsh vocals and paints a picture of pain, and even torture.
“Crimen Contra Humanitatem” has a faster moving pace, with thick drumming and riffing. It’s like a caged dog who hasn’t been fed in weeks getting free from his pen. “Your Sweet Smell and Bitter Taste” highlight the dichotomy between was may be sensed, and what is ultimately real. It has slower, and more somber tones, that almost exist within that undefined space between light and shadow. “Lightgiver” has a more aggressive bite. The fast moving pace seems to glide above the earth as it moves, dodging rocks, hills, and anything else in its path. The thickness of the song bears down on you and threatens to squeeze the life out of you as well. “Apokatastsis Panton” has slower tones that slam with power, and you can hear thick bass notes. Some of the tones also have a harrowing and even evil sound to them.
“Agony in Blood” has another powerful and desolate sound, and at first it seems to be an anomaly as to how these two styles can fit. But, they fit very well, and CRUST delivers them with an aggressive indifference. “Frozen Tomb” closes the album, and that’s how the album leaves me…in a coffin frozen deep in the ground. The overwhelming somber tone here could crush you into the dust, and the aggressive tones light the fire on your ashes. This was a fantastic album from start to finish. CRUST’s brand of Black Metal incorporates elements of Doom and Post, and whips them into a product that that traps your soul in the abyss. Despite some flickers of hope, the story is encapsulated by that weight of suffering they talk about.
