Babylons Skräck

Wow, these guys unleashed a great release that isn't better because it's not a full-length!

One thing that people in the Metal scene (fans, writers, bands, etc..) forget is that nothing (musically speaking) is created intentionally. When one thing of acts as METALLICA, SLAYER, DESTRUCTION, SODOM, KREATOR and others on their prime, remember that they all had strong influences before bringing things on a formal model. Using SODOM as an example: on its beginning, the trio was a mix of influences between MOTÖRHEAD, VENOM, TANK and it’s what lies behind releases as “In the Sign of Evil” and “Obsessed by Cruelty” (the sonority was a consequence of the lack of money for time on studio and the lack of know-how of the trio). If one asks Tom if he knew on those days that SODOM would be one of the forefathers of Black/Thrash Metal, obviously his answer would be no. And bands as the Swedish trio TYRANNOSATAN drinks a lot of the source dug by SODOM, KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, SLAYER and others as heard on “Babylons Skräck”.

The sonority is something rough and simple, trying to emulate the organic dirty sound of the past, but wisely, things were done in the studio in a way that is an ‘updated’ vision of the sound qualities of the past, because the band prefers to have an understandable musical outfit (what means that it’s easy to access their musical ideas just hearing). Musically - as stated above - the trio works on a trench on Old School Black/Thrash Metal, but paying attention on some moments (as heard on “Vemhir”), the precious melodies are inheritance of JUDAS PRIEST’s works of the past (something that was clear on the 80s), some traces of Hardcore and Punk Rock. The songs aren’t just a recollection of cliches eroded by the use, but the band brings elements of early Power Metal incarnations (remember: the genre wasn’t meant to be a definition for what HELLOWEEN created on “Keeper of the Seven Keys” saga, but the evolution of the fusion of the energy and melodies done by acts as IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST). Come on, let’s stop writing and speaking, and just spin this release! You won’t regret!

For the fans of Old School Metal tendencies, “Babylons Skräck” will have a strong appeal, because the combination of aggressiveness, melodies and very good harmonic structures of Thrash/Black Metal heard on “Vemhir” (a fast song that’s filled with great doses of energy and hooks, with great guitars), “Babylons Skräck” (a beginning with excellent slow and bitter moments, then it becomes a bit faster, with massive bass guitar and drums rhythmic sheath, including fast blast beats), “Bland Stenar Och Rötter” (a bit more hardcorized with extreme blast beats, and in some moments, it evokes a Blackened Death Metal tack), and “Astronomicon” (prepare your ears for the massacre, and the use of rough tunes of the vocals contrasting with cleaner ones, with a ‘motörheadian’-like energy and filthy filling the guitar riffs and solos turn this song into something addictive).

If you’re into Thrash/Black Metal, or a better saying, if you’re into Metal, you must be introduced to TYRANNOSATAN’s music, and “Babylons Skräck” is a fine opportunity to do so!
