Sometimes the information that a band sends accompanying their music is a bit off. Just like what I received for “Primal Pulse Thunder”, the fourth studio album of PURIFIED IN BLOOD, a band from Stavanger in Norway. It states that the album was recorded May – August 2025 at The Void, Sandnes, Norway. With the release date being 14 march 2025, that seems a bit unlikely, don’t you think? But hey, let’s leave that to one side and start discussing what a review should entail, which is the music and whether it is any good.

With the band being active since 2003 means that PURIFIED IN BLOOD has over 21 years of experience in making their brand of Melodic Death Metal mixed with Metalcore parts where needed. It makes for quite the explosive combination that does work in some aspects, but not so well in others. Where it does work is in the impact department, because what “Primal Pulse Thunder” harbours is very Heavy, rather direct and certainly bloody dark. And what also is quite a strong point of the band is to know which kind of voice to use when bringing their vocals to life. It does make listening to just that bit easier, or should I say that it prevents from annoying pieces of mismatched use of music and vocals from happening. In that respect I especially like “Spiritual Thirst”, as using the voice as an extra instrument (like a deranged didgeridoo), works wonders.

As I listen to the songs themselves, I can only say that the more I listen to “Primal Pulse Thunder”, the more my initial enthusiasm for the album starts waning bit by bit. The songs are Heavy, are very much in your face, but in my ears, I have to conclude that they are lacking in the depth department. That for me makes this an album that I won’t mind listening to when it is being played in my attendance, but it is also not an album that gives me so much joy that I would consider acquiring it for my own collection. Of course, I understand that there are people out there that feel that I am short changing the impact of this PURIFIED IN BLOOD album. It is my opinion that “Primal Pulse Thunder” is not a bad album by any standard, but for me it also isn’t one for the record books. Sorry.
