It has been ten years since the Finnish band SCUMRIPPER, hailing from Lapeenranta, Etelä – Karjala / Mikkeli, Etelä – Savo, has come together to make a whole lot of noise. The music they make is a mix of Black, Death and Thrash Metal. Yes, very much like MIDNIGHT does. It even has the same kind of feel now and then, only with more Death ‘n’ Roll influences like ENTOMBED used to demonstrate. In just under half an hour the band lets us enjoy how they feel their Metal should sound on “For A Few Fixes More”. This one was released on 11 October 2024 and is the sophomore album of SCUMRIPPER. Their debut is from 2021 and has the title “All Veins Blazing”. I haven’t heard that one (yet), but after listening to “For A Few Fixes More” I have to admit that they have gotten me curious.
With the blend of Black/Thrash/Death Metal they make you will have some influences and peers that shine through. I already mentioned ENTOMBED and MIDNIGHT, but can also add VENOM and MOTÖRHEAD to the mix. You will undoubtedly be able to add more names, but these ones stick out to my ears. And all nine songs are as strong as you would hope they would be. What I like about this kind of music played is that a band is doing who understands that you shouldn’t take everything in life seriously. A little bit of humour is to be found in the right places, like when spoken word is used after a song, like in the title song “For A Few Fixes More”. Don’t get me wrong, the band is very serious in how they portray their Metal, but apparently know how to keep the Heavy thoughts become altogether too strong.
As for the songs themselves, they are quite good. SCUMRIPPER give up the vibe of a band that is trying to have fun while playing, but also make sure we appreciate the effort they are putting into entertaining us in their own special way. Like in “I Cum Pain” (what a great title!), they have been able to give you an extra dimension when they go slow, as that will undoubtedly remind you of early BLACK SABBATH. And these kinds of hints are to be found throughout the whole of “For A Few Fixes More”. I for one do get where the band is coming from, but also where they are going. And I can only say that I agree with the path that SCUMRIPPER has taken on “For A Few Fixes More”. I’m ready to receive those extra fixes.
