Back on the Streets
Tumenggung
Indonesia is showing the strength of its Metal scene since some years ago. From extreme Metal ways to melodic ones, everyone can find one or another good Metal act that fits on their personal tastes. And it’s very good to hear bands with works as “Back on the Streets”, the second full-length of the trio TUMENGGUNG. Coming after 5 years since “Soul of Steel” (their first full-length), the album depicts a band that has an Old School Heavy Metal way, or better saying, a band that works in that vein between NWOBHM and German Speed/Heavy Metal from the 80s (and even from Hard/Glam, as heard on “Living on the Edge”), with excellent melodies and catching choruses, energy to blow up windows and doors, solid instrumental and everything else that the fans are used for.
But the trio shows personality and a good technical work, so it’s really easy to deal with its music. The production worked in a way that the sonority - built under a good work on mixing and mastering - could depict an Old School Heavy Metal musical work, but taking advantage of modern techs, so the sonority is organic and heavy, but yet defined in a level that makes the understanding easier.
The songs: there are eight very good tracks on “Back in the Streets” (“Wall Breaker” works as an intro), all of the showing a very balanced quality. Then to hear and like moments as “Back on the Streets” (excellent guitars and charming melodies on the chorus), “Living on the Edge” (a touch of musical accessibility on the album, with charming melodies and very good vocals), “In the Dead of Night”, “Déjà Vu” (a more introspective moment of the album), “1000 Tons of Metal” (some influences of MANOWAR can be heard on the rhythms due the solid work of bass guitar and drums), “Symphony of Hate”, “Strangers” and “Soul Reaper” is truly easy. But two tips: find a second guitarist for live shows, and the vocals can evolve a bit more (they’re good, but can be better in the future). “Back on the Streets” is a very good surprise for fans of Old School Heavy Metal tendencies, so pay some respects to TUMENGGUNG. The band deserves it!
