More Insane
Undeath
To North American Death Metal acts in their majority, to keep Death Metal as classic as they can it’s a matter of honor. It’s something that seems to be in the genre’s DNA, because rarely the bands try something out of the limits, but it doesn’t mean that they can’t do something good. And even following a way that was used many times before, the quintet UNDEATH shows a very good work on “More Insane”, its most recent full-length. The words above state clean what they band offers: a massive and brutal form of classic Death Metal, with a very good technical insight (pay attention to the bass guitar parts heard on “Dead from Beyond”).
The formula they use isn’t new at all, it’s widely known, but the way they work (very good death growls contrasting with harsh screams, catching and insane guitar riffs and solos, and a solid and technical work on bass guitar and drums) shows a strong personality pulsing on their songs. And the energy that flows from them is truly INSANE!!! Mark Lewis (widely known for his works with CANNIBAL CORPSE, DEATH ANGEL, DEICIDE, KRISIUN, HAVOK, KATAKLYSM, BELPHEGOR, DYING FETUS, NILE, SIX FEET UNDER and many others) produced the album, and signs the sound engineering, mixing and mastering as well. This means that the best was extracted from the band and gave the songs a brutal and aggressive outfit, but in a clean and defined way, and with very good instrumental tunes (without technologic devices overloading certain aspects). And the artwork of the band’s drummer, Matt Browning, for the cover is sick and a statement that it’s a Death Metal release.
Death Metal fans will love “More Insane”, because the album deserves its title, as shown on “Dead from Beyond” (excellent rhythm contrasts with rich technique from bass guitar and drums), “More Insane” (it’s impossible to resist its sickening guitar riffs and arrangements), “Brandish the Blade” (insane contrasts between growls and screams are hear on this one, with excellent instrumental sheath supporting everything), “Disputatious Malignancy”, “Sutured for War” (this one presents some Thrash/Death Metal traits on the rhythms contrasting with furious blast beats), “Cramped Caskets (Necrology)”, “Bounty Hunter” (very good slow parts with technical contrasts, with oppressive guitars filling the spaces), “Wailing Cadavers”, “Disattachment of a Prophylactic in the Brain” (it’s clear that some Death ‘n’ Roll influences can be heard here on a brutal dressing), and “Bones Clattering in the Cave” (an immense storm of very good guitar arrangements).
For fans of extreme Metal, UNDEATH will have a strong appeal. Enjoy “More Insane” as the walls of your house tremble and the neighbors complain!
