Book of the Machines

Moose Cult

A very good Doom Death Metal release is what this English quartet offers to you.
October 10, 2024

Doom Metal was born in England, and no one can deny such a truth, because the first band of the genre is clearly the all-father BLACK SABBATH, who would influence acts as SAINT VITUS, TROUBLE, CANDLEMASS, WITCHFINDER GENERAL and many others. But when labelling a band as a Doom Metal act, one must give a deeper explanation, because (as happens in all Metal subgenres) it presents an ample set of sound outfits. Then what’s MOOSE CULT about with “Book of the Machines”, the band’s second full-length? Answering such question: their music is a form of Doom/Death/Heavy Metal, or in other words, is a crossing between the heaviness and slow paced-tempos of Doom Metal with the charming melodies inherited from traditional Heavy Metal, but under a subjective outfit, and use of harsh shrieks and grunts as well (and some clean parts as well, as heard on “Earth(l)ing”) depicts the extreme Metal side of their music as well.

Contrasts between bitter and oppressive moments with deeper landscaping ambiences are heard as well, so to hear and see if you like it or not is the best option. But even this way, surely that their music is very good. J.K. Rollin’ (recording and editing of the drums), Sam Loose (recording of the lead guitar), Huge Cult (recording of bass guitar), Jonny Moose (recording of guitars and vocals, and is the one who did the mixing as well), along with Dan ‘mastermind’ Swanö (mastering) are the ones who created the rough and abrasive sonority of “Book of the Machines” (due the tuning used for the musical instruments), but obviously with a defined outfit that enables the fans to understand what’s being played. And it’s very good, fitting on their music.

“Erewhon” (a fine, harsh and long track based on bitter ambiences and nasty instrumental parts giving the right support for the vocals), “Death Meditation”, “Curse of Creation” (an oppressive and sharp song with a mastodonic weight and sharp guitars), “Earth(l)ing” (with clean vocals parts and the use of clean instruments brings things to an amazing refined outfit), “Gateway to Evolving Thought” (here influences from Jazz and Jazz Rock appears with clean guitars and technical bass guitar parts), “Headless Cult” (where the extreme Metal side of their personality becomes clear) and “Book of the Machines” (very good drums’ parts contrasting with the weighty guitars) are fine samples of what the quartet can do, besides the sensation that they have more to offer is clear.

For those addicted to Doom Metal ways, “Book of the Machines” is a ‘must-have’ item, and MOOSE CULT is just beginning to show what they can offer to the Metal scene…
