We Could Have Been Radiant

Goodbye Meteor

Perhaps the best part of them album is that the band lays several paths across life for the listener to choose. Each one represents a different set of feelings and emotions, yet each meet together in the end. Does this mean that we really don’t have a choice? Not to me. For me, it means that we are free to follow whatever direction we want despite the common ending. For life is a journey, not a destination.

"We Could Have Been Radiant" explores human emotions, moving from hope to inevitable destruction. While the first part of the album follows on from “Metanoia” EP, closing the chapter on humanity's quest for a positive outcome, the end of the album illustrates this disillusionment, and aims to guide the listener towards the saving light provided by the present moment. The album has six songs. “This is Not Here” is first. The mostly somber and depressive tones are also tinged with struggle…struggle that begins fairly simple and becomes much harder as the song continues. It’s almost as if your burden gets worse as more misfortune is piled on. You try your best to stay afloat but sometimes life is just hard.

“No Signal” has a steadier and more upbeat sound but there is still plenty of room for reflection. When life doesn’t give you a signal to tell you how to feel about something, you have to find it on your own by facing your issues head on. This song offers some encouragement but also a few obstacles. “Destructuration” is where you reach a crossroads on your travels. Both of the forks forward look the same, so which one do you choose? The choice you make doesn’t matter, because either one makes you wish you chose the other. This is one of life’s greatest paradoxes…that feeling of regret despite your best intentions. The lengthy “What We Are Here For” is more of a question than an answer. The answer seems so obvious, but we are a society and much more complicated. It’s the layering in the song that evokes so many different emotions.

The title track is a reminder that each of us has a choice to make when it comes to how we respond to adversity. Every one of us faces adversity in life, but each of us has a different reaction to it. We can either find a way to deal with it, or we let it gnaw at us, take root, and eventually take control. The song seems to illuminate the right path, so how come so many of us don’t choose it? “Phosphenes” closes the album. They are “those images of light or color that you can see while your eye is closed. This can happen when you rub your eyes or when you cough.” Perhaps the best part of them album is that the band lays several paths across life for the listener to choose. Each one represents a different set of feelings and emotions, yet each meet together in the end. Does this mean that we really don’t have a choice? Not to me. For me, it means that we are free to follow whatever direction we want despite the common ending. For life is a journey, not a destination.
