Wrapped in Mist

Helga

This was a very well constructed album in the genre. The band knows when to turn it up, and when and how to let the melodies ride out. It was quite beautiful, but also dangerous when needed.

From Bandcamp, “Once, sequestered away in the far reaches of Swedish hinterland, a shrouded girl wandered alone through interminable forest. Chanting psalms amidst birch and pine, her choral voice drifted like birds through an evening mist. The chapel choir she sang with had gifted and honed her voice, but woodland and lake would always be her church. Her name – Helga.” The album has ten songs.

“Skogen mumlar” is first. Harmonic female vocals carry the ethereal sound along with some hasty riffs, and thumping bass. The strings in the background also work very well with the song. It’s part Metal, part Folk, and very tasty. “Burden” has some complex rhythms to go along with the vocal harmonies, and you can begin to appreciate the band’s talent here. At times, the music is as light as a feather, while other times harder, but always done with melody. “Water” is a more delicate affair, with smooth tones and a feeling of warmth that comes over the listener.

“If Death Comes Now” has a peaceful sound, almost as if the composers aren’t afraid of what comes next in life. But, depressive tones of grey settle into the song. “Farväl” brings straight anger to the table, with harsh vocal screams and a funky bass line. But it quickly settles into somber clean vocal harmonies, and you can really feel the poignant emotions. “Alive Again” features the band’s softer and prettier side at times, but there is still a power running along with the song. “Vast and Wild” has very catchy melodies that are frail and memorable. One thing that the band definitely has is well constructed harmonies.

“Som en trumma” has charming and pretty tones to go along with a commanding sound. The backbone of the song is solid, but the way the melodies dance over top will mesmerize the listener. “Mountain Song” is like tranquil feeling of solitude you have when you are alone in nature. Something about this enables you to see things more clearly and feel things more deeply. The title track closes the album and wraps up the tale with strings and alluring vocals. But make no mistake, there is still plenty of power in the riffs. Overall, this was a very well constructed album in the genre. The band knows when to turn it up, and when and how to let the melodies ride out. It was quite beautiful, but also dangerous when needed.
