Darkblack - Midnight Wraith album cover

DARKBLACK is a new band to me although they have released two other efforts.According to their bio sheet they play traditional Metal. I guess you can call it that. I really don't know how to say this other than to come right out and say it, this is bad, really bad.I assume the production is supposed to be old school. If by 'old school' you mean absolutely pathetic, then you (You as in, the reader) would be one hundred percent accurate. The first song "Doom Herald" begins with a slight rip off of "Black Sabbath" (the song, not the band, even though the band and song are identically named) It's not very obvious, but I did hear it. The vocals aren't necessarily terrible, but the production doesn't help them any. I hate giving negative reviews, but I can't help it in this case. I will give them a little credit in one department, the playing of the instruments is not bad, but it sounds so archaic that it is hard to listen to more than once. If they get a top notch producer, they may have a chance. I don't know where they would get the money to do so, but if they don't, I can only see them fading away into nothingness.

There is one good song on the album, so I guess it's not a total failure. This song gives me hope, if only a little. The song is named, "Broken Oath".Like other songs on the album it is an up tempo song, but it has a catchy melody that somehow manages to cut through the cloudy production. The whole album honestly sounds like something from the early seventies. Maybe this is all they could afford. I hope they find a way to improve because I don't wish failure on them, not at all.

If you like it very very old school, then you might like it. It is an EP, so maybe it will be cheap enough to by in used bin. Overall I would say avoid this one. There are so many better releases out there. Save your money for one of those.
