Frostbite
Zubzero
First off I need to congratulate ZUBZERO on creating such a beautiful cover for “Frostbite”. It just shows how showing a little can create such a powerful image. The band hails from Leeuwarden in Friesland, The Netherlands. It is a beautiful area, and the Frisians are the only ones that actually have their own language within our country. Not that they are using that one on “Frostbite”, no they have stuck to English. The band has been active for some 25 years, and I am ashamed to confess that this is the first time I encountered them. Until now they weren't involved in the “Frisian Metal Massacre” albums that have been released until now.
Is that a problem? No, of course it isn't, as it makes sure that I listen to this EP with fresh ears, without prejudice. It is good to know that they released a full length album in 2001 (“Stolen Land”), and some EP's and a split afterwards. The 2022 demo “Lost Sun” undoubtedly has resulted in the signing for this “Frostbite”, and I can only say; quite rightly so. It was released in September 2023 and only now is getting the attention on Metal Temple. And judging by the level of the four songs making up just over 12 minutes of our time, more than deserved to finally be noticed.
The combination of Death Metal with Thrash influences and even some bits of Metalcore thrown in for good measure make up a good mix for ZUBZERO to excel in. and even though this is a full blown EP, you sometimes get the feeling you are listening to demo recordings. It's all not too tight, but still on track and time. But what makes me the happiest is the level of spontineity that I am getting while having the tones if “Frostbite” gliding tthrough my ears and into my brains. It makes you forget all the imperfections and enjoy what is being brought to the table.
I can therefore conclude that if you love a bit of good Heavy music without complications but with a healthy dose of positive energy, you might want to give ZUBZERO a try and listen to “Frostbite”. Who knows, it might invite you to go back in time and try and find out how the band has progressed through time. I won't be doing that, but I definitely will be monoitoring these guys to see what they will be coming up with in the future. In the meantime I will endure and enjoy another dose of ZUBZERO and play “Frostbite” once more.
