Intergalactic Demon King

ZEKE SKY is a solo artist who crosses over many different genres, creating a unique blend of Rock/Metal. He writes songs with complex shifts and twists, bringing in Progressive Metal, heavy guitars adding an almost Power Metal flavor, gentle ballad-like pieces that incorporate Hard Rock and Neo-Classical as well. His second full-length album, Intergalactic Demon King, was released on November 11, 2022, via Atomic Fire Records. The album opens with "Overture," an instrumental that incorporates strings and horns, grows over the course of the tune, and has a very Neo-Classical feel mixed in. The ebb and flow of the music is well done, peaceful, and it leads beautifully to "On The Tip Of The Tongue," the first full song. The keyboards and pianos transition the track well. The strings keep the Symphonic overtones going through the rest of the song, maintaining the theme and giving the song a cohesive feel.
"Light The Sky" uses some really heavy guitars, often played faster and more technically than some of the other songs. Zeke can definitely shred and Adam keeps pace with some nice double kick work getting up into the blast beat range. We also get some harsh vocals under the cleans showing the range Zeke has as a singer, not just an instrumentalist. The title track has an excellent opening. There is a death march style intro before the guitars crash in and take the song to the next level. The Progressive Metal shows up pretty clearly here with some drastic twists and turns in the tempo. The song is a wild ride and lots of fun to follow.
Jumping down to "Fire Witch," we get another heavy song, but this one has a strong melodic feel to it. It's an instrumental with some heavy, shredding guitar work, but also a midsection that is wildly different, dropping to about a quarter the speed of the first section. This is heavier on keyboards, giving it a Progressive Rock feel. The anthemic ending sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, closing it out gently. "Endlessly Forever" is a mid-tempo track for ZEKE SKY. It is pretty fast, but not the blazing speeds of some of the other songs. The upbeat tone is "happier" than some of the other tracks, more positive. The piano interlude at the halfway point that shifts to keys, then goes into guitars using the same phrase is a work of art. I love hearing things like this, repeated themes across different instruments and sections of songs, tying the whole thing together. I consider that a mark of excellent musicianship.
The album concludes with "LionHeart," which opens with piano and strings in a truly Neo-Classical style. Those fade out after transitioning to guitar, then the vocals come in, mixing harsh and clean vocals. There is some much technicality in all of these songs, it takes an awesome composer to even contemplate writing stuff like this. ZEKE SKY is not an artist I would ever try to pigeon-hole into one specific genre. His blend of genres and sub-genres ends up creating something unique enough to truly defy categorization. His ability to take different swaths of music and weave them together into a wild, yet beautiful, tapestry is quite astounding. This is a well-written and performed record that will stick in my mind for a long time to come.
