Crushed By The Wheels Of Progress

Fast, dirty and heavy; once the kind of creepy spoken word intro to "Meet Mr. Mossberg" cuts out and the actual track begins, YELLOWTOOTH have you firmly between their salivating jaws. There is almost a tangible weight to this music, imbued with a lot of quite creepy realism, and some absolutely filthy riffs and equally gruff lyrics. The album lacks sophistication, but there is a lot of raw energy and grit.
The first two songs are high speed, high energy blasts of rage and distaste, which then changes into the monolithic weight and sludge of "Season's End". The 8 and a half minute epic that is "Crushed By The Wheels of Progress" has a very linear structure, starting off with an incredibly heavy, slow introduction which gets progressively faster as the song progresses.
The vocal style has a lot of modern thrash and early death metal influence, with a pronounced guttural shout, rather than a full-on scream which retains a clarity of diction which is often lost in heavier groups. The incredibly driven guitar riffs move from the slower, almost bluesy-metal to a much heavier style, which are often linked to bass grooves, with a lot of sinister tonalities used. The solos are all short and sweet pentatonic shred-fests, with a lot of use of the wah pedal.
"Spiral Stairs" moves through several different riffs, and has a very tight rhythmic groove to it which really encourages a primal aggression.
Overall, "Crushed By The Wheels Of Progress" is a raw, brash, and balls to the wall outing that is all pure meat and potatoes metal. There's nothing big, clever or sophisticated about YELLOWTOOTH, and that seems to be something that the group sees as no bad thing. If you like music that is loud and obnoxious, aggressive and all high speed guitar-led riffs, then this is a pretty damn good album.
