Yasru - Kar Prensesi album cover

YASRU is Folk/Doom Metal band from Istanbul, Turkey, and formed in 2009. With limited information on their Facebook and Bandcamp pages, and nothing included in their EPK, little more is known about this band. So, we'll have to let the music do the talking here. "Kar Prensesi" is the band's fifth release, and contains six tracks.

"Kışın Tatlı Hüznü" leads off the album. It begins with a steady riff and slightly muted production. The riff has some melody behind it. The vocals are guttural in their delivery. Sung in native Finnish, it gives the song a true sense of self. The key melodies and vocal "aahs" after the chorus are very charming. An extended guitar solo drives home the Doom. "Uzak Karanlık" opens with sole melancholy strings leading to a brief key passage. Following some harsh vocals, clean ones come in, and are quite emotive. It's a very pretty song.

The short three-minute instrumental titled "Sonsuzluğa Uğurlarken" reminds of a funeral pyre. It is devastatingly mournful. "Kar Prensesi" being with thick bass guitar notes over some dual harmonic leads, with keys. The vocals are clean at first. Though I have no idea what he is singing, I can feel his saddened passion. Harsh vocals are a bit more feisty however. "Kutsal Saygı" is more powerful in nature. The Folky elements are still there, but this song is a bit more guitar driven. The harsh vocals aren't quite as guttural here and there are many layers in the song. The band clearly know how to write cohesive music. The odd vocal chants at the end of the song add an interesting element.

"Başka Boyutta" closes the album. It's the longest track, at seven-and-a-half-minutes. It opens with lead guitar notes and keys, with harsh vocals. Clean vocals temper the song. It takes a brief pause at the half-way mark, with timpani and a ray of hope. The strings are very beautiful. As the ending approaches, hope is dashed with gloomy elements. The tree in the winter landscape on the album cover sums up the album quite nicely. Endless winter, with no sign of spring. Loneliness...enough to drive you mad. Cold, that seeps into your bones and you can never get warm. No wood for fire. Nothing to eat. You are destined to live out your days in the frozen tundra with no hope, and no one to share anything with. Yet, beauty lives with the heavyhearted.
