All My Dreams Came True

I always love coming across new bands that just want to shake things up a little bit, push the boundaries of what is considered 'normal' and what is more of a boat pushing exercise than a Black Metal band that has replaced their guitars, with a piano? Well, step up WRECHE and their son to be released album "All My Dreams Came True". The artwork is a simple affair, a monochromatic image that is simple and elegant.
Opening is "Mysterium" and it is bizarre. There is so much going on, the drums are busy, but they sound programmed to me? This lowered the production value of the track and really detracted my attention from the erratic and intense piano playing that just seemed to never miss a beat. It just didn't sound quite right to me. "Scherzo" is again 'out there'. Whilst it is missing the aural assault of the heavily distorted guitars, it isn't lacking for the disorientating and unsettling ambience. But unfortunately, or me, its again just a bit erratic and lacking substance for me to really enjoy it.
"In Agony, To The Earth - And Heaven" and "Severed" are continuing on the structural themes seen throughout the album and I am finding myself really having to drag myself through the tracking. I am a fan of classical music, especially solo piano pieces, my personal favourite being LUDOVICIO EINAUDI, but this is not the flowing and finessed melodies, but much more of an erratic and seemingly unstructured tracking that simply baffles me. "The Darkling Thrush" finally shone some light through; with the depth of the tracking really creating a much more rounded piece, the piano rolls through much more effortlessly and the subtle bac tracking present really adds a much more enjoyable element to the music. It just sounds less frantic!
"Les Fleurs Mov. 1" is a rolling unsettling piece, dissonance and untasteful progressions really add an atmosphere that just can do nothing but put you on edge. Well, if there were any certainties to this album, it was going to go out with a bang, to that end "Le Fleurs Mov. 2" absolutely smashes out the finale. It takes all of the dissonance and organised chaos to really send the album out in a blaze of fire.
Overall, this wasn't really an album for me. The piano substitution for guitars was, whilst interesting, disappointing and really left me wanting a bit more from the music. I just couldn't help but feel that there was much ado about nothing with this album, but for others, it might be exactly what they want to stick through their headphones after a long day at work.
