Öröklét
Witcher

WITCHER is an Atmospheric Black Metal duo formed in Hungary in 2010. "Öröklét" is the band's fourth full-length album. The album has five songs, and "Örökség (Heritage)" is first. The opening sound is powerful and somber, almost like a funeral procession for a King, and the harsh vocals are throaty. There are also light symphonic elements, but they don't take over the regal sound. "Szélhozó (Windbringer)" has a more mellow, and tentative opening, with piano. The main riff hits hard, not in the sense of its weight, but in sheer emotional power. The lead breaks sing and lament, and the vocals provide a cold reminder of the genre you are listening to. "Röghöz kötött (Soil-bound)" begins with what sounds like electronic piano notes and backing choirs…again, very melancholy in its approach. The riff does seem to provide a little hope, but it is fleeting. The vocals are absolutely filthy, and they offer a thick coating of blackness to whatever bits of light there are on the album.
The title track also begins with solemn piano notes and in comes that sentimental sense once again. The songs are quite charming in terms of the melodies, but unfortunately, they all have a similar sound. The final song is a cover, and it showcases a different side of the band. Some more of this could have gone a long way to help the album diversify a bit. You can hear the classical chord progressions in the piano notes. I thoroughly enjoyed the sound the band presents on the album. It has that thick darkness of Black Metal with a counterbalance of solemnity. However, besides the final song, the first four had too similar of a sound and it just wasn't quite diverse enough for me. It's good, but it could have been excellent with some subtle sound shifting.
