Still Scum

Whiskey Ritual

This type of free-flowing, Fuck You attitude is what is largely missing in the music scene today, and reminds me of the great political and religious non-conformists DEAD KENNEDYS did back in the day. They pull no punches, and hold nothing back. Although the album is simple from a composer’s standpoint, music doesn’t have to be overly complicated for you to enjoy it.

From Bandcamp, We are made of memories, and we’re the last ones who will remember. In this fast world, this scene fades away and slows down. Dazed as Mark Renton said in his final speech, all the same, all out of breath. And while in the streets everyone leans on posing scarecrows, we are still part of those who want to burn everything. Scarecrows included. More Punk than Punks, as we used to say. Never conform, always against the grain. A matter of attitude. An annoying, damned attitude to get to the end, alone and dead. Our dedication to the survivors are the songs that brought us here. After 15 years, we are still here to tell you fuck off, still being credible, still doing the same shit that we have written. - You don't like it? Better this way.”

The album has six songs, and “Borstal Breakout” is firs. It’s an interesting combination. It’s sort of an old school Punk band meets Black Metal, or MOTORHEAD with a very raspy vocalist. The music is three-chord blues based music, akin to THE RAMONES, but the vocals give it a dirty and nasty edge. “Real Wild Child” is another completely rowdy offering. It’s like giving the kids free reign of the playground without any adults present and just sitting back and seeing what happens. They run freely, steal each other’s things, and generally cause mayhem to one another. “We’re Coming Back” has a more positive sound from major chords. The vocals are still incredibly filthy and black, and the music, although simple, is effective.

“Get off My Back” is a two-and-a-half minute burner that runs so bright and so hot, it leaves a trail of smoke behind the fire. The pacing is very fast, and the vocals sound like someone who is trying to talk fast with their mouth full. “Mongoloid” is another ball of raucous energy, and at this point in the album, the band is playing firmly with their middle finger held up to all. Is “Who Will Save Rock and Roll” a rhetorical question? Either way, it’s a great closing anthem that you can sing along with.
