...And Justice For Y'all

In this ever growing business that is the music industry, it's not uncommon for bands to re-release and re-issue their albums. Sometimes they may get additional bonus tracks and sometimes they may just get the remaster treatment. One of the latest to fall into that category is the very first album released by WEEDEATER called "...And Justice for Y'all" which seems to take it's inspiration from the METALLICA album "...And Justice for All" for it's title.
Hailing from Wilmington in North Carolina in the USA, this three piece trio classify their music as Doom Metal, Sludge Metal and Stoner Metal and this album seems to fall into the latter category although the band prefer to categorize their sound as Weed Metal which makes sense as the lyrical content seems to refer to drugs and marijuana. Originally released in April of 2001, "...And Justice for Y'all" set the benchmark for the band and created a buzz with the listeners while the critics were struggling to put a tag on the band's sound. Since then they have released three more studio albums adding a total of four to their belt with a fifth album currently being written in the process.
Produced by Billy Anderson who has worked with other bands such as EYEHATEGOD and NEUROSIS, the debut from WEEDEATER has a total of 10 tracks which starts out with a three minute or so instrumental called "Tuesday Night" and then eight vocal tracks follow after that with another instrumental called "#86" playing as the second to last track. One thing to note is that the first vocal tracks on the album "Monkey Junction" shares the same name as an actual location near the band's hometown. The band also include a cover of the CROSSBY, STILLS AND NASH song "Southern Cross" on this album.
One of the grudges I've always held about genres like Doom and Sludge Metal is that often the music can be mixed poorly and that the singer usually growls and screams too much so nine times out of ten the music becomes unenjoyable and the lyrics become uninterpretable. This album by WEEDEATER falls victim of that trap. I can appreciate the fact that this is their first album but they could have done a bit better.
The production is very much okay but not great as at times various things can often be lost in the mix and the vocals are very much lost and all over the place plus the fact that you cannot really hear or understand the lyrics does not help either. Usually with a metal album, you expect it to get your blood boiling and your heart pounding with excitement but this one tries hard and it may succeed in some places but overall, I found it very boring.
Overall I found WEEDEATER's debut album "...And Justice for Y'all" a bit poor and a bit mediocre in places. I'm sure that they do improve on their later releases but after listening to this, I don't think I'll be giving the others a listen I'm afraid.
