It is always cool to listen to music sung in another language and l like it particularly in Metal. And I believe this is the first time I will hear some Metal in Hungarian and this privilege is provided by WATCH MY DYING that is releasing their 5th full album Egyenes Kerüló independently. The band was created around 2000, and with that number of albums, I expect to be good. And the first track “Egyenes Kerülő” does not disappoint. A dark intro and some extra crunchy guitar riffs preparing you for what is to come and setting the mood of the album. We follow with the heavy “Kopogtatni Egy Tükrön” and it is a punch in your face. Great riff and tempo and with touches of Death and Industrial and some great arrangements. The Hungarian language seems to be made for Metal and it sounds very cool.
Tracks like “Jobb Nap Úgysem Lehet” and the intricate “Napköszörű” will make your head bang and their language will not be a barrier. The arrangements are top notch and it sounds like Death Metal for sure, but with a lot of influences. The band has a pair of good guitar players in Sándor Bori and Viktor Szabó that are not much into the dramatic guitar solos, but they fill the sound with interesting riffs and heavy guitar tones complementing each other as you can hear in “Zuhogó Testek” and “Minden Rendben” .This last one is my favorite of the album so far. A crazy riff in a crazy tempo provided by competent drummer Márk Maczak ,even when the track is invaded by an electronic beat for 2 seconds. We reach “Csontfehér” and the syncopated drum patterns by competent drummer Márk Maczak invading the speakers. Demonic vocals and a crazy tempo, that again shows that the band is not locked in the classic Death Metal and is able to explore different facets within the genre. One thing that gets lost in the mix is the bass sound of bass player Imre Eszenyi unfortunately. With so many guitars on low tunes, the bass could be more out of the guitar riffs whenever you have the chance to add some different riffs to complement the axes.
After an instrumental called “Mindenáron a Béke Se Kell” that I do not know why it was added in this album, we reach another gem in “Fedetlen Lépés” that took the title of the best of the albums so far. Pure violence and with some touches of Grindcore and Punk. The singer Gábor Veres is a beast. He can go from melodic to guttural in a heartbeat and the range is impressive. However, the band is keen to some dramatic moments and somber moods and instrumentals like, once again in the track “A Sötétség Legalján” (say this 3 times). I really do not know the purpose of these 2 tracks with no songs. We end with another banger in “Utolsó Fejezet” that is acoustic and full of melody in the singing. Really cool song that surprised me with its beauty after so many heavy tracks. It sounds like a traditional song from Hungarian folklore and it seems to be sung by a girl.Good album with a lot to explore.
