Digital Pollution
Wasp Mother
It is not everyday that I have to review a release that lasts less than ten minutes but here it is, the new EP "Digital Pollution" from the US Grindcore band WASP MOTHER. This is their third musical offering after "Demo" (they didn't think too much to name that, do they) and "Self-Loathing" from 2022. The band's line-up consists of Kevin on guitars/vocals, George on drums, Pete on bass and the new member of the band, the charming girl with the heavenly voice, Jenny Mac on lead vocals. While doing my research on the band, I came upon an article where she states that she is a "Death metal girl" and she is into MORBID ANGEL but she also likes oldschool Hardcore and even some CROWBAR. Sounds great but let's see what WASP MOTHER have to offer in this short EP.
"Death Threat" sets the tone with some heavy and sludgy guitar riffing which then turns into an all-out Grindcore assault. Frantic guitars, blasting drums and the deep growls of Jenny. The track is a little more than a minute long but the guys manage to change the pace several times which speaks very good about their abilities to play that kind of music. "Impending Doom" follows and it is just 43 seconds long but it attacks with an energetic mid-tempo Hardcore rhythm that goes into full speed blastbeating in the last few seconds. Before you know it, comes "Cross Me" which is the first cover version in "Digital Pollution". Originally it belongs to the short-lived Hardcore/Youth crew New York band PROJECT X who were something of a supergroup back then with members from prominent New York Hardcore bands such as GORILLA BISCUITS and YOUTH OF TODAY. WASP MOTHER's version sounds much heavier of course and much more darker. The Grindcore assault continues with "Chamber" in which Jenny Mac's vocals go into a complete hysteria mode. Then comes the shortest track in the EP,the 19-seconds long "Life's Vengeance", which is an aggressive outburst of sonic madness. The final is set by the longest song here which is a cover again - "Enough" by the New York Ska/Reggae band URBAN BLIGHT. I don't know how the original sounds but WASP MOTHER's version is a crushingly slow Sludge tune that leaves you willing to hear more of this stuff.
WASP MOTHER are beyong any doubt a very talented band that should appeal to every fan of the Grindcore/Powerviolence scene. It is great to see that more and more female-fronted extreme Metal bands are popping up, most of them being real gems. I hope to hear more from WASP MOTHER in the future.
