Originally forming in the early 1990s, WARPATH sadly disbanded in 1996 before making a return 20 years later, much to the joy of the underground metal scene in Germany. The band have numerous accolades to their name, including appearances at major festivals (Wacken), and can now boast having a 7th studio album in the form of "Disharmonic Revelations". The band have been described as thrash metal, however I didn't get that vibe fully when listening to the album. Not really a criticism or praise, just an observation. There certainly are thrash elements. In particular during "Parasite", especially around the 2.20, when the intensity picks up and we hear SLAYER like shredding passages from the guitars. "Innocence Lost" I think is the closest to a pure thrash metal song, and a very good one at that!
I'd definitely place the band in the hardcore category. This is evidenced when the band go down the simple yet effective route, trading unnecessary complexity for hard hitting on-the-nose grooves and breakdowns. I think this hardcore feel is achieved with the vocal texture. Dirk is consistently heavy, aggressive, yet still retains clarity in his voice. He's supported by other band members in a call and response hardcore punk style, in particular during "Decisions Fall". The choice of lyrics also creates this hardcore vibe. Especially during "Digitized World", with the band describing an over-dependence on technology within our society in a very hard hitting and raw delivery. Dirk however demonstrates surprising range and versatility, especially during "The Unpredictable Past". The whole song is a much slower, experimental doom-infused sludge fest, with the vocalist paying homage to the late great Peter Steel with a glorious deep gothic tone to his voice! This isn't a one off though, as "A Part Of My Identity" features these elements in another sludge fest.
I see more nu-metal and metalcore elements during "Resurrection", especially during the glorious closing riff, likely inspired by AS I LAY DYING. Overall, I think there are a lot of things to appreciate on this album. It is quite a broad album with many elements from across the metal spectrum. The risk of being so expansive is that the band's identity may become lost. However, the band retains that solid hardcore backbone, with some brutal breakdowns and in-your-face rhythmic segments. Production wise, I think the album feels raw and perhaps retrograde at times. This works perfectly though and further adds to that hardcore feel. All instruments come through sharp and clear too, but without sounding overly-polished. I honestly think WARPATH would put on a fantastic live show, and I'd jump at the chance to see them if they played anywhere near me!
