Fire and Blood

Viserion

Overall, this was an intense album in many ways. The level of aggression was high, and the band stepped on the gas pedal and hardly let up. Despondent elements provided a hopeless side of life as well.

Based out of Queens, New York City, VISERION take raw black metal and metamorphose these elements with a chaotic fury of extreme influences. Death, grindcore and progressive dynamics bleed through their caustic compositions entwining a tortuous aura across the music. They are unafraid to descend into the blackened depths and showcase the horrors within. The album has five songs, and the title track is first. It comes out of the gate with a very aggressive bite. The riffs are firm, and not a wall of sound, more thrashy in nature. The vocals are done both in screams and gutturals. The guitar solo is a bit on the chaotic side, but he does put a lot of energy into it.

“Mad King” is another ball of energy wrapped up tightly with a black bow, and the vocals are absolutely filthy. The slow pace also allows some somber elements to shine, and they peak with hopelessness. “Reign of Fire” is another firm and energetic song, and so far, the band hasn’t let up on any of the intensity they first showed. Again, somber element emerge and the aggression takes on a despondent edge. “Blackfyre” hears the frantic pace slow and even some melody comes out, showcasing the band’s diversity. It turns dark shortly thereafter however, and contentious. The storm that was on the horizon is now fully raging.

“Harrenhal” is the final offering, and it rolls forward with machine gun drumming and a thick guitar sound. The vocals again are quite somber, though aggressive, and the two feelings can indeed coexist. Overall, this was an intense album in many ways. The level of aggression was high, and the band stepped on the gas pedal and hardly let up. Despondent elements provided a hopeless side of life as well.
