Blackened by the obsolescence of a decaying world whose cultures breed miasmas of stupor and negligence, VESTINDIEN, is the result of such macabre embraces. A band whose music translates beyond its own genre to something visceral and unique Null is an album that is anything but simple or straightforward.
Beginning with the song, "Mot Dag," the album opens on an instrumental piece burgeoning with waves of noise and ambiance before acoustics come in and set the tone for a warm synth. The bass slowly grows in volume and the lead delivers a slow and fragile feeling progression before the drums come in and completely shift the whole dynamic of the song to something upbeat and voluminous-the synth and ambiance grow into a cacophony of noise giving the song a heavier percussive feel as the strings maintain their rhythms. "Beerenberg" begins in the preceding track as a sort of forced-segue, the rush of rhythm presents a stark contrast to the already aggressive outro of the opening number; the song itself moves in and out of dynamics to accentuate the gritty verses and outro which sounds as a fire enkindling in a silent embrace of night. The title track, "Null," once more has the campfire effect layered in tandem with a warm synth and a dripping effect the combination of which is dropped instantly for a lo-fi rhythm progression on guitar which is later paralleled by synth and bass before changing its approach to allow a more grounded rhythm for the verse to lay upon. The progression becomes more and more triumphant before breaking up into static and corruption, thus ending the song in completion. "Ned" is one of the album's more conductive tracks bearing raw aggression in a more primal form than what we've come to experience previous; the shifting tonal and volume dynamics remain as integral to the band's sound.
The whole of the album is swathed within a warm and dismal soundscape, that which is as inspiring as it is defeating; of a form just and demeaning that bears an indelible passion with every pulse of the beat and every jaded and corrosive chord; something by which few bands find themselves able to achieve in a similar runtime: a signature sound. The guitars range between gritty and caustic rhythms to intentionally low fidelity overlays, a pairing which accents the bitter aggression of the rhythms; the bass bounces in and out of projection sharing its dynamic with the kick making it feel as an actual beating tone; the drums are a form balanced and temperate changing in volume to match the intensity of the transitions and movements; and the vocals bring the whole amalgamation to a head creating a leading direction for each song through every bitter and biting syllable.
"Null" took me by a sublime surprise presenting unto me a sound by which I was previously unfamiliar, something that captivates just as much that it inspires. And whilst the sound is not something wholly genre defining VESTINDIEN'S approach to carving their niche is well met and exacting, something that should gather them notice; the album feels a few tracks short of a full package but what's available is of stunning virtue.
