Well, it's hard for me to review bands like this, because I just can't make myself be objective enough to give it a better review. I do love Black metal from its core, and VERHEERER is one of those bands that seem to want to keep the flame alive. Even though this is my first time listening to this band, it's impossible not to be completely enamored with an album like this. So, here I am writing more as a fan rather than a reviewer, but I will try my best to be objective. It's going to be hard.
VERHEERER is a German Black Metal band that was founded in 2008; the band is still actively performing and recording. With one EP and one full-length album before this one, they have solidified as one of the best acts that Black Metal the Deutcheland has to offer.
The pros: First, the album intro is just amazing. It has a lot of the characteristic Black Metal atmosphere, and gives you a hint of what you to expect as the album moves along. Strong music, strong rhythms and the atmosphere that doesn't let you distinguish, and keeps you guessing what is music and what is not. The album begins with the characteristic Black Metal blast, alternating between the tremolo and the usual B.M. drone riff throughout the track. The uniqueness here are in the vocals, they are more scraped and totally understandable. More so than any other Black Metal project I've experienced. So, I tally extra good points as a result of this, and what's particularly great is they never lose the rawness. Instead, they actually seem to acquire more just because of this crazy Thrashy voice. They also have melodic sections, some solos, percussion bridges, and more, all while they play fast and heavy, maintaining a breakneck pace and energy among the tracks. I consistently have to remind myself that they're Black Metal.
The cons: It's the thing I criticize the most in all Black Metal projects. The lack of originality. But don't get me wrong. This has a unique identity, especially with the vocals. It's just that in some moments, I feel they tried to put all the aforementioned together just for the sake of it, just because the album needed it. At some points, I feel some parts are ripped off to put together on some other just to fill in a song. But with that said, they're still one of the new to me bands that I can't stop listening too. I want to hear this one, and I expect to backtrack their catalog in the near future.
