Varmia

Overall, one of the first things I often complain about is an album without much diversity, but in this case, the diverse shifts are a bit more subtle and nuanced. The aggressiveness is its best feature, and it rarely lets up, sprinting the mile in record time. It’s progressive in nature because of how it starts, stops, and even moves throughout the album, and this was an album that can burn a hole in your soul.

VARMIA is a Black Metal band from Poland, and the album was sent without an EPK, so we will have to let the music do the talking. Eight songs await the listener, and "czarne drogi Xsiezyca" is first. It has a fiercely deep and aggressive sound, but also some progressive elements in some of the way the chords move and the meter shifts. The guttural and clean vocals will both haunt your soul. "zwykli zmarli" is another fast blast of aggression where the chaos and tension are so thick, you can't squeeze even a momentary gaze through them. The clean vocals are done in a ritualistic cadence, as if they are preparing to torture you for eternity. "niekrwi" hears the intensity continue as evil and frightening as ever. There are also some slower moments, where the harrowing sound sinks into your head and blackens your soul. "steisan azzaran waks" marks the fourth straight song with a chaotic sound and deep, thickened bass notes. The band steps on the gas pedal and holds it down with rage from start to finish.

"dzien, pol nocy" is yet another cut of cavernous contention, the likes of which spread like the bubonic plague, through every house, village, town, and city. There is also a steady hum of thickets that acts like a constant on the album, and it's horrid. "der tot Adalbert" is the first single released ahead of the album, and it's really the first chance you have to catch a little breath…a little mind you. Instead of naked aggression, the band focuses more on the harrowing elements in their music. "korona" swings the pendulum of sound back to aggressive territory, and the echo in the fierce vocals registers them as evil as ever. "…po widok za" is the final cut, and the raging sound continues as strong as ever. There are also more ritual and torture elements at work here, and you feel like you will be bled and set on a pedestal for every black soul to watch and revel.

Overall, one of the first things I often complain about is an album without much diversity, but in this case, the diverse shifts are a bit more subtle and nuanced. The aggressiveness is its best feature, and it rarely lets up, sprinting the mile in record time.
