Choices Made in Anger
V8 Wankers
I like heavy bands with an attitude. No matter what it may be. Sometimes is in their visual, their songs, their lyrics, their guitar player, their humour, or the fact that they don’t give 2 fucks about what people think of them. As per the press release I have received, V8 WANKERS seems to fit all that as the name of the band suggests. The band was created around 2000 and are now releasing their 10th album Choices Made In Anger. The output should be a heavy rock with a lot of humour and some mockery.
The first 2 tracks “Choices Made In Anger” and “Never Luzz” are exactly that. Some good heavy rock indeed with a great singer that reminds me of UDO a little. The tattooed band has not released an album since 2018 and it seems that they also had some member changes throughout the years. The theme of the songs usually depicts wild parties, alcohol, awkward situations and the pride to be a wanker like in “Wankers Forever’”. The song structure is basically an energetic hard rock with easy singing melodies and catchy choruses. Is one of those albums that when you put it to play at a pub, everybody will love it. Imagine a DROPKICK MURPHYS without the “Irishisms”. The singer Luts Vegas has a pleasantly raspy voice and a good range that fits perfectly with the type of sound proposed.
V8 WANKERS also tries different approaches in each song making the album varied and not boring. “Liberty Cuffs” is funny just in the title itself, but the band has funny lyrics as well as you can also see on “Sun’s Up” that reminds me of HANOI ROCKS. The band also has a good drummer and bass player combination in Fred Fast and Ivel Pain providing the solid foundations for the others to shine (Sorry, that is the reality). Some songs have some interesting vocal approaches and some spoken text like in “Joke Of The Century” or in “H8 Ya With A Passion’ that is another creative title and cool song. This album has 12 full songs and each one is full of debauchery and raw heavy rock. Their sound reminds me of a lot of good bands from the 80’s and 90’s Heavy Metal and Hard Rock scenes. However, without the hairspray attitude. “Flat Out’ is another good track with a Punk attitude. It seems that the guys despite being German, were able to gather the 70’s Punk from UK, the 80's Hard Rock rom the US, and some Heavy Metal from the rest of the world from the 90’s, and mixed everything with a great dose of humour, raunchiness and attitude.
I thought I was hearing a ballad on the track “Put A Smile In Your Dial”, but I was gladly mistaken as an album with such energy and humour, should not welcome a suffering ballad unless it is a funny romantic tale. The album ends with ‘Sing Like You Mean It” that is exactly the song that will make everybody sing in the pub, stage and audience. Cool band, great attitude and humour without being too raunchy and more concentrated in the music. The band also has 2 good guitar players in Marsi Enzmann and Donny Spaceboy and even the member names have a touch of humour. The album has more to offer and deserves a second listen.
