Ural - Just For Fun album cover

It is definitely a very interesting time in the world of modern old school Thrash Metal. With bands from all around the world bringing forth their contributions and pulling the global thrash community that much closer together. Well things just got a whole lot more interesting with the release of "Just For Fun" from Italian Thrashers, URAL. "Just For Fun", being their second full length album, has all the elements required to become a Thrash classic. Experimenting with different time signatures and spitting out riff after head banging riff, each song keeps you in suspense and surprises you at every turn.

The album opens with "Crossearth" and has my attention right from the beginning. An air raid siren kicks it all off and ushers in what I would consider a modern Thrash masterpiece. Changing through at least 10 different adrenaline inspiring riffs, this track sets the tone and tempo for the rest of the album. I just have one question for the band after hearing it, "who the hell is Bill?". Next in line is "Werewolf". Right from the first chord its apparent that "Werewolf" is not your average thrash song. Tight riffing coupled with off beat time signatures and brash, aggressive vocals, this song deploys a full on assault on your mind, and takes no prisoners! A brilliant display of their songwriting prowess.

"W.D.W. (We Drink Water)" is yet again, another fine example of modern Thrash with a tight grip on old school roots. The main guitar riff has a very blues oriented feel to it, derived from the pentatonic or blues scale. One of my favorite tracks on the album would "Inside". Slowing the tempo down a bit, the main riff is a bone crushing power chord anthem that commands attention. Like a bulldozer, it stops for nothing, plowing down whatever is in its path. With condescending, political lyrics and a ripping solo of equal aggression, "Inside" pushes their Thrash agenda even further. URAL is a fantastic modern Thrash / Crossover band with the potential to become a major contender in the metal community. If I had to compare them with anyone, I'd have to say they remind me most MUNICIPAL WASTE and but I think their song composition is a bit more diverse. URAL is one band you will want to keep your eye on and I strongly recommend this album to anyone with a thirst for Thrash. Well done URAL, I'm excited to see where the future takes you, and hopefully we can see you over hear in North America someday soon.
