UNHUMAN DISEASE, the project of Nocturnus Dominus hails from Stilwell, Oklahoma, and came together in 2001. A demo was released in 2003 titled As My Blood Spills Upon Thy Altar and starting in 2006, he put out four full length albums over the next three years. The last of the four to be released was Into Satan's Kingdom in 2009 and now has been chosen to be reissued through Moribund Records.
The album begins with haunting bells and beastly words as you enter the kingdom of Satan. "Diabolic Devotion" is a classic Black metal track that is mellow toned with the occasional snare bursts. The drums are muffled and sound like they are recorded live and used for the final cut. The guitar is melodic and keeps a consistent flow to the music as the demonic howl of Nocturnus beckons at the forefront. "The Calling of Satan" is the haunting tale of hearing and giving in to the call of Satan and the six-minute track is a prime example of how Nocturnus put together a cult following throughout his years with this project. The song blasts into effect right from the opening and is tactically pieced together with timed blasts and gloomy melodic guitar work towards the end of the song.
"Demonic Unholy Night" features a catchy metal riff apart from the usual Black metal components. Most songs on the album are very direct and down your throat Black metal with unearthly scream and growls and capture the dark brutality that you find with most European Black metal. "Into Satan's Kingdom" carries a dark undertone to the sacrificial altar with a little more tremoring bass than on other songs. The drums are simple blasts with the occasional roll to round out the guitar and are more audible and ferocious on the track. The final track "To the Halls of Death" is a more up-tempo song with all the instruments more clearly audible throughout and is a very great sounding Black metal song. The guitars and bass come across clear and carry a pumping melody without a need to be flashy. The production on this song is above the other tracks and the vocals are easily understandable. This is the top track on the release for me.
The recording is raw and sounds as if it was recorded altogether live except for the final track. The album seems to focus on the pureness of what Black metal was at the time. It is a release covered in darkness and satanic ritualistic lyrics that I wouldn't say were ground-breaking at the time, but certainly helped influence the genre and create a following along with it. The album was on par with the Black metal coming out of the Scandinavian and German bands at the time of its release.
