Merged In Abstract Perdition

Undersave

The sound of “Merged In Abstract Perdition” is technical with progressive elements and plenty of twists and turns in tempo and rhythm, all based on a grim melodic framework

UNDERSAVE were formed in 2004, and they are from Lisbon, Portugal. The Death Metal band released one EP and two full-length albums so far. Their third album "Merged In Abstract Perdition" was mixed and mastered by Diogo Santana (AMARGURA; SCHISM) at Noise Portrait Recording. It has a length of about 38 minutes, and it was released via Indian Black, Death, and Doom Metal specialists Transcending Obscurity Records. The album has a powerful start with the track "Unshakable And Unlimited Levels Of Obssession". The guitar riffing is thunderous, and the melodies are grim at the start. The opening exchanges are at a measured tempo with a sluggish rhythm; however, it does not take long and the track transitions into a frantic verse part at fast pace with punishing riffs accompanied by plenty of double-bass drumming and blast-beats. The vocals are growls and they range between the medium to higher end of the guttural range. There are plenty of tempo and rhythm changes throughout the track. While the melodic framework is bone-chilling, the guitar riffing has a lot of progressive vibes.

"Unshakable And Unlimited Levels Of Obssession" was uploaded by the label on YouTube with the link provided below. "Unconscious Assimilation…Path To Tangible Reality" opens with an extended instrumental part, driven by the guitars, leading into a verse part at measured tempo. Tempo switches kick in quickly, introduced by the blast-beats. The guitar riffing is devastating, and once again includes progressive elements. The growls are mainly deep with a few tonal shifts towards higher pitched screams. The verse parts are three-parted based on the tempo, with the pace getting faster as they progress.  "Effervescent Futile Thoughts Of A Phobic Being" has a frantic start at crazy pace with the riffing supported by the blast-beats. Once again, there is an extended instrumental part leading into the verse part. Characteristically are the tempo and rhythm breaks, with abrupt changes to a sluggish rhythm and tempo progression up to breakneck speed. The guitar riffing is partially tight and includes once again progressive vibes. However, many parts of the riffing sound like that of previous tracks. The vocals use many higher pitched growls.

The first part of "Forced Retraumatization…Unlocking Spiritual Illumination" is an instrumental with punishing riffs and crushing basslines at a measured tempo. It is a lengthy part and a bit monotone, however, after around two minutes, the track continues with the vocals, tempo switches, and rhythm breaks. The vocals utilize a few tonal shifts from deep-lying growls towards higher pitched screams. The track is mainly driven by the rhythm breaks and the relentless drumming, while the guitar riffing maintains a monotonicity. "Fictitious And Impermanent Self-Refinement" continues with the sound of the previous tracks with the progressive parts of the guitar riffing are more prominent than in previous tracks. Once again, tempo shifts range from a measured tempo up to fast pace, which is a common feature on the album. This track includes a short break at slow tempo. "Fathomless Contempt Nourished By Unrealistic Predictions" has a fast start driven by the guitar riffing and the blast-beats. The vocals join in quickly, leading the track into the verse part without any tempo and rhythm changes. It is arguably the fastest and most direct track on the album with plenty of blast-beats, double-bass drumming and direct guitar riffing, even though a certain playfulness in the riffing remains. The melodies are blood-freezing. This track includes a contributing lead guitar solo, which is a rarity on the album.

It all closes with "Narcisstic Supreme Alienation" and the track has a fast start. It takes a while until the vocals join the track once again and during the verse parts there are many tempo and rhythm changes. The guitar riffing is technical with progressive elements and is accompanied by the double-bass drumming. There is another contributing lead guitar solo, the second one on the album and I get the impression, the lead guitars should have been utilized more often. "Narcisstic Supreme Alienation" is despite all the twists one of the fastest tracks and a good way to close the album. UNDERSAVE deliver a decent Death Metal album. The sound of "Merged In Abstract Perdition" is technical with progressive elements and plenty of twists and turns in tempo and rhythm, all based on a grim melodic framework. In my opinion, the tracks suffer from repetition in the riffing and many of them could have been trimmed. The album is well produced. Death Metal fans who like it playful and progressive will like what they hear on "Merged In Abstract Perdition".
