The Grand Inferno
Tungsten
From their record label’s website, TUNGSTEN's musical journey is characterized by a fusion of various metal sub-genres, including traditional heavy metal, power metal, elements of progressive metal and notably Swedish folk songs. The band's unique sound is often attributed to their diverse musical backgrounds and influences. Each member brings a distinctive flavor to the collective sound, resulting in a dynamic and engaging musical experience. TUNGSTEN's journey continues, with anticipation building for their future releases and performances. The next album, "The Grand Inferno,” was in October 2024. The band's ability to push boundaries and consistently deliver high-quality metal music positions them as a notable force in the global metal scene, and their story is one of persistence, creativity, and a relentless passion for the art of metal music that connects the past with the future. “
The album has eleven songs, and “Anger” is first. Ominous tones lead the charge, with a slow, thick, and weighted groove. Mike has a versatile voice as well, singing well in both clean and harsh styles, and the chorus sports a bit of Power Metal. “Blood of the Kings” is a little faster moving and has both haste and energy. Piano notes fill in a bit here, and I can’t shake that Power Metal feeling within the music. Take the chorus for example, “we are Vikings, carrying the blood of the kings…” add a dragon to the scene and you have full-fledged Power Metal. The title track uses tender emotions to carry the sound at first, followed by a sweeping entrance of sound. The guitar solo is fantastic as well. “Walborg” has the familiar jaunt of Folk Metal in it, especially in the extended chorus.
“Vantablack” has a heavier sound, fueled by a thick bed of guitars and some electronic elements, and it showcases the band’s ability to shift within genres on the album, keeping their sound fresh. The chorus is very emotional as well, and I can hear where KAMELOT got some of their influences from. “Me, Myself, My Enemy” has mystical tones in the beginning, and segues into a weighted riff with electronics and even some symphony. The chorus again carries much of the big sound forward. “Chaos” swirls with some dark, heavy, and tense elements, and that main riff is powerful. The chorus takes on a key change, and suddenly bright beams of sunlight shine through the clouds. “Sound of a Violin” features, of course, somber violin notes among folky elements. “Angel Eyes” closes the album. The melody line is fantastic, and the punch of the big chorus is so catchy,
One of the finer points of the album is indeed the band’s ability to shift gears through a few different genres of Metal. They are all accomplished musicians, as well as an outstanding vocalist. The album has staying power as well. The songs are polished clean, and memorable.
