From Bandcamp, “I, Voidhanger Records introduces and describes the album as follows: After seven long years of silence, Martin Lang’s TODESSTOSS return with a new full-length, “Das Liebweh-Dekret,” yet another masterful effort by the German artist, active for almost 25 years in multiple art fields and author of a surreal and unconventional black metal. The sound is raw and sharp, perfectly calibrated on oblique and sinister melodies always on the verge of derailing.”
“Antirobotid” is the first cut. As with a lot of band that I, Voidhanger has on its roster, the uniqueness of this band is no exception. Although the music is overly treble, the harrowing qualities of the music should be underscored. There are audible bass notes, and some use of the “Devil’s 5th” in the riffs. “Tanz der tausend Masken” begins with a riff out of the 1970’s, like BLACK SABBATH, and it’s almost jovial at times. There are some light phasing issues in the song, and the bass drum sounds more like someone hitting a mattress than a drum, and it’s an odd sound.
“Irhe Gebiltzheiten” has a lot of tension on it, as shadows appear and retract again, and as a listener, you are trying to get your bearings. Where are you, and how did you get there? The harsh vocals might provide an answer…you are down below in the one place you feared. “Greiser Witz schwelt im Geschlecht” has a more traditional Black Metal sound, but also, some doses of the composter’s personalities. If nothing else, they have a vivid imagination. The clean female vocals bring an almost hypnotic sound to the table, and one thing is for sure, you never know where they are heading.
“Ghulismus” is a 24-minute beast, and you can expect and are offered about everything that you can think of in a Black Metal song…horror, tension, torture, a bad trip, even some old school 70’s riffs…the list goes on and on. The short “Bannflucht Sahneland” closes the album, consisting mostly of bass guitar notes. While this album was pleasing, it was all over the place with a variety of sounds. It is a very unique offering for fans of BM that are willing to throw convention to the wind and explore a bit.
