Powers of Darkness

It's a solid combination, and THELEMITE is really a solid band. There's nothing too new in what we're seeing here, but it's damn good music.

THELEMITE is a traditional Heavy Metal band from Athens, Greece. ''Powers of Darkness'' is already their fourth full-length album in their relatively short career. The overall theme is obviously this attractiveness to the darkness, attributed to film and cinema and the vampire and werewolf movies from the 40's and 50's. The golden age of the horror movie genre and all the night owls come to life. The feeling of power in the darkness and night, the way you feel liberated at night when the shine does not shine on you. It's the way that you feel compelled to soak it it with everything and everyone sleeping, you own the night and the darkness appeals to a lot of us out there, the silence on the streets, it's something that really is important to many out there, me included.

It's a theme that transcends all of the album and they stick to their guns, not many bands go all in but I appreciate bands taking risks like that. Obviously, I like my fair share of concept albums but a band that continues the trend of a specific theme throughout one album is a big plus for me. SABATON has their history lessons, POWERWOLF was history and werewolves and THELEMITE has something to special on their hands. I was not fond of the clean vocals, but those harsh vocals were on point. The album would have benefited from this harsher style of vocals even though the clean vocals did fit with the overall tone of the album even if I felt they weren't the greatest and need some refinement. The overall theme of the album really helps out and emphasis is not on the vocals that much thankfully.

This is a Heavy Power Metal band with a lot of power, as one might expect. The guitar riffage is constantly intense and just on the fine edge of thrashy, while the solos are extremely impressive, as one would expect from a Heavy Power Metal band. The drums are great and make sure that you never stop headbanging throughout the entire album. The vocalist is very sneery and deliberate, with some attitude. It's a solid combination, and THELEMITE is really a solid band. There's nothing too new in what we're seeing here, but it's damn good music.
