Thee Old Night

Although the sound was minimalistic, it was a fairly enjoyable listen, and I found it as close to described as possible. One thing that was notable, was the vibrato at the end of the singer’s notes, it was uncommon, but it worked well with the music and the subject matter.

From Bandcamp, “THEE OLD NIGHT is a dark, minimalist folk trio based out of North Carolina and Richmond, Va. The group blends elements of psychedelia, classic country, and traditional doom metal into an unprecedented, spectral sound focused on melody, meditation, and the liminal spaces between established genre norms.” The album has ten songs, and “Precious Blood” is first. The sounds is indeed minimalistic, and somewhat psychedelic, with a folky twist, and the vocals are sung with a strange vibrato. There are some subtle melodies that build as well. “Shadows” is another acoustically based song, with a backdrop of Doom, mostly in the vocals.

“All Around Us” has a similar sound, especially in the key of the vocals, and the meter, although this one is tinged with that old school Country sound in the leads. “Red Like Crimson” has toms and hand claps instead of a traditional drum kit, as well as a groove. The Doom elements are still the most recognizable of all of them again. “Life in Pain” is a short two-and-a-half minutes where some catchy sounds are present, and one could sing along with the chorus. “Sibyl” has more hardened elements from the pick hand slapping the acoustic guitar. It moves with a groove, and your foot starts tapping. “Leave the Day Behind” has more free flowing sounds from the legato strums of the guitars, and the vocals are more expressive.

“Salvation” hears the guitar slaps continue, and I get the image of an old blues guy sitting on his porch in the dead of summer in the south, just jamming on some chords. They were simpler times then, weren’t they? “Darling” closes the album, and it is reminiscent of an old country song for me, with elements of Doom of course. Overall, although the sound was minimalistic, it was a fairly enjoyable listen, and I found it as close to described as possible. One thing that was notable, was the vibrato at the end of the singer’s notes, it was uncommon, but it worked well with the music and the subject matter.
