The Wolves of Avalon - Y Gododdin album cover

From their EPK, "With golden mead singing songs of heroism in their blood they rode forth through the morning mists, each heart pledged to victory or death. With swords, spears and bravery beyond measure they crashed into the swarming mass of the invaders. Like dogs of war they fought upon that field drowned in blood, beneath the circling ravens, till all but three were gone. They died for Mynyddawg Mwynfawr, for Gododdin, for the North and now they ride for eternity, singing their songs of war in the dreams of those who would remember them." The album has five songs.

"Through the Murdering Night" is the first. Spoken words from a gravely voice speak of wars, death, and life, to the tune of clean guitars. The sound gradually increases until a discernable riff comes through, with harsh vocals. The riff has a little Power Metal tinge to it, and the lyrics are about what you might expect considering the subject. "Men of Gododdin" opens with a somewhat heavy riff and strange sounds from keyboards. The vocals fill most of the void left from the thinness of the riffs. The clean vocals in the chorus sprinkle in some melody, and the steady rhythm continues throughout, with a bit of darkness mixes in with the light.

"The Shining Company" has a little more gallop to it...something that you can sway your head to. The backing elements are nice as well...a little keys and other samples. This song has a quality of depression and a quality of hope...just what one needs when heading off to war. "Dead Men's Cloaks" is a slower and more introspective song with plenty of power when the band needs it. The verses are terse and tender, and the harsh vocals come out with confidence in the chorus. Again, the backing elements are nicely done...some soft strings and other instruments. The lengthy "Is This How It's Meant to Be?" closes the album. The harmonized clean vocals in the first few minutes are wonderful. It segues into a deep and harsh sound close to the half-way mark, before returning with a meaningful and Folky sound through the end.

This album was hard for me to describe, and perhaps that is because I have never encountered this style of music before. In an effort to expand my horizons, I must say that I enjoyed the sound presented quite a a bit. It's Metal from the harsh vocals, but the other elements are grounded, almost Celtic in nature, if you will. The band worked hard to fill some of the void left from riffs with plenty of backing sounds. The melodies that result are quite nice. I would recommend this for any Metalheads looking to take a break from the chaos and for people searching for more substance from their music.
