Subterranean Exhile
The Wizar'd
Metal maniacs, rejoice! I am proud to present to you: THE WIZAR'D; signed via Cruz Del Sur Music, hailing from Australian grounds - performing Doom Metal, on their 4th Studio Album entitled: "Subterranean Exile" (released April 24th, 2020).
Since formation in 2004; the quartet in question have 2 Demos, 2 EPs, 1 Live Album & 4 Studio Full-Length Albums in their discography so far. I am introduced to their 4th album entitled: "Subterranean Exile". 7 tracks ranging at around 35:09; THE WIZAR'D arrange an intricately designed formula of heavy-hitting Doom Metal developments. The titular track opens up the record; stirring up this primordial soup with a gnarly yet raspy riff, amplifying a healthy dose of old-school yet traditional Heavy Metal traits & an atmospherical hint of Tony Iommi riffing with King Diamond-esque cords. Implementing a boistrously bouncy amalgamation of towering yet riveting pursuits which surge with progressively technical, yet uniquely versatile vehemence and a blistering barraged frenzy of killer but detailing fuelled - fuzzy catchiness in enriching contrast.
Consisting of Ol' Rusty on guitars/vocals; the frontman excels his own signature trademark of skyrocketing pipes that scream with window-shattering yells, while the rhythmic fretwork flamboyantly showcases thunderously solid strumming revolved around a gritty component of rocking melodies. "Wizard's Revenge" pursuits with outrè panache, ripping shreds & rumbling grooves, consistently creating a dynamic fabrication of mellifluous reverberation. Momentously manifesting meticulous quirkiness, snappy vibrancy & rawly rough tightness. Revelling with seamlessly sonic rituals that supply shreiking meatiness, rampent virtuosity & quintessential dexterity flowing into a borderline foundation of punchy jumpiness with primitively crunchy finesse. Embodying an immersively harmonic blend of lacerating heaviness, euphonic hybrids & consistent dimensions harnessing complex distinctions.
Blackie on the audible bass injects an infectiously-driven pummel to it, crafting an empowering thump with slamming pulsations. "Master Of The Night" constructs an epic attribute of immensely sublime triggering, portraying volatile robustness with profusely bulldozing ingredients intertwined into a fluidly polished soundscape of mid-tempo chugs & galloping haste forging an experimental embellishment of gripping hooks that salubriously strike with trailblazing remarkability. Ironically 2nd guitarist entitling himself a Master Of The Night also contributes a razor-sharp stability of efficacious instrumentation, energizing masterclass performances with majestically mesmerizing remedies. While the 1:37 interlude: "Ecstatic Visions Held Within The Monastic Tower" delivers a short vignette of flamenco-inspired acoustic arpeggios with twirling sounds shroud with upbeat mysticism & sorcery. Starting off with an eerie haunting jarring until oscilliating wildly rushing maelstroms until fading away into the opening rift of "Long Live The Dead".
Maniac Frodsham batters his drums into a hammering but smashing rampancy of rambunctiously mellifluous tapping, usually quite soft on the ears but its hymn is effective nonetheless. The sound production comes across as outdated, still retaining that sense of easy-listen but hardened coherence. Intriguingly bestowing an elegantly exquisite slab of magical musicalities, oozing out psychedelic substance with organic nimbleness – rapidly swifting with persevering patterns that pace themselves nicely with the supernatural themes of the occult & such. The penultimate track: "Evil In My Heart" is the "Breaking The Law" of memorable songwriting, the racing aesthetic demonstrates a more Heavy Metal kick than Doom - it, however is an incredibly sulphorous tune that will have feet dancing in no time.
Overall concluding "Subterranean Exhile" with the definitive Doom-laden formulaic converged Heavy Metal ending: "Dark Forces"; featuring spoken-word enchantments in a deadly, guttural tone & more of those rollicking twin-guitar attacks...I am compelled to say that THE WIZAR'D certainly outdone themselves with this one. Newcoming Doom Metal enthusiasts will wonder why the Heavy Metal is prevalent more than its Doomy counterpart however, it doesn't distinguish the fact that the record is an enjoyably entertaining experience and is definitely a discovery that's worth the time. Hardcore doomsters, don on your hooded garments and hold onto your goblets aloft! You'll love this one. Check it out!
