THE TEMPLE is a Greek Doom Metal band that started over a decade ago, and after a series of changes in the line-up, finally released their debut album, "Forevermourn", in March 2016 via I HATE records.
The work is an excellent piece of classic Doom Metal, with the sad landscapes of guitars and slow drum patterns that characterize this genre, evocating suffering, and unimaginable loss.
The album has is own soul and originality, even if adhering to the most classic melodic style of doom, tradition here doesn't mean lack of originality nor beauty; in fact it has been a while since I put a doom album on repeat like with "Forevermourn".
The low-tuned guitars and thick wall of sound are strongly present in each song. Slow headbanging is inevitable throughout the whole album. It is one tune blending into the other flawlessly, without a hesitation, like identical twins, but still each with is own gloomy soul, disconsolate character, and dark peculiarities. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom. We find an interesting recording style with double-layered vocals, which gives an impression of a gloomy choir. With its extremely introspective lyrics, it's a never-ending desperate litany, an excruciating lament.
"The Blessing" has a rough and dry solo start, which only starts to introduce us through to the realm of the sound of THE TEMPLE. The second tune is "Qualms In Regret", which has beautifully written lyrics, simple in its meaning, but very poetic and deep at the same time. This track was part of an earlier EP but has its own everlasting splendour with its universal feeling of loss and regret. It's a 7 minutes track, but it is a sonority that keeps you hypnotised and lost in time. "Remnants" keeps the attention of the listener very engaged with its many changes in rhythms. It is very interesting to follow the variations of this wall of sound, which starts with a very cadenced slow motion feels to then speed up and take you down to your knees with the entrance of the vocals. In a world where everything seems lost, "Beyond The Star" is where we find hope, we find a light through the darkness. The upbeat mood, if so we can call it, is vitalised by the vocals that, even if they are still part of a mournful cry, are starting to have some bit of happiness, which is mirrored by the entrance of fast guitar riffs. The last track, "Until Grief Reaps Us Apart", with its 12 minutes and over, is a perfect combination of moods, rhythms and feelings, bringing new elements of beauty. A great closure to a wonderful debut album full of impressive melodies and deep emotions.<
