Agnomysticism
The Scalar Process

From Bandcamp, "French Progressive/Technical Death Metal band THE SCALAR PROCESS showed a lot of promise on their debut album as a young band. It took them five years to come up with a follow up album and the progress on it is simply staggering. The music seems to have taken an ethereal form, soaring above and raining down thundering riffs followed by shards of piercing melodies. The alternating showers ensure the music doesn't overwhelm with either blasting or mellow parts, maintaining an elegant balance that keeps you trapped in a dreamlike state throughout its duration. "Agnomysticism" is a highly accomplished album, virtually flawless in all ways, that takes the sound of the band forward and elevates it beyond the ordinary."
"Physical Conquest" is first. Following an ambient opening sequence, the music roars in with the sound of an EF 5 tornado. It's tightly packed for the most part, but there are also these wonderfully melodic interludes here and there. "Far from the Flesh" is even more aggressive. Like a full blast of cold, icy, and fast moving air, it descends on your faster than you can imagine. Even for as thick and deadly the sound is, there are also moments where you can catch your breath…the drummer must have not gotten that memo however. "Illness" is shorter running and packed to the gills with sound once again. It's so tight, if you tried to unwind it, it would spring back and explode. They make the cool downs that much easier to enjoy. "Affluent Marea" is a three-minute clean reprieve from the overwhelming aggression. It shows that the band is just as good at melody as they are chaos.
"A Breathing Moment" is anything but. There is such a tight unison in how the band performs, and they don't even miss a beat. I would be remiss if I didn't talk about the physical demands of the music on the drummer, and he keeps impeccable timing. "Agnomysticism" is the view that the existence of God, the divine, or the supernatural is unknown or inherently unknowable. Agnostics believe human knowledge is limited, making it impossible to definitively prove or disprove the existence of a higher power. Once awoken, the song charges ahead at lightning speed, breaking down all barriers in its path. "Sigil" is ambient and melodic, and gentle, warm tones sooth you. There is a steady pulse of electronica, and the feeling that you are still dreaming. "In a Light Frame" is the final offering. It enters with a full plate of keyboards, followed by a fast and aggressive sound that could blot out all light.
This was an incredible album from start to finish. The sheer amount of intensity and aggression are tempered with moments of pure wonder. The timing they keep…is perfect. It's one of the best Technical/Progressive albums I have heard in a while, because the band maintains a balance across all of the songs. Arden enough for any Metalhead, and melodic enough for reviewers like me, it's really the best of both worlds.
