It Leads To This
The Pineapple Thief
Not every review you write is easy to do. How on Earth am I going to do justice to the music that THE PINEAPPLE THIEF has produced on their latest effort, called “It Leads To This”. These Brits from Somerset have been around since 1999 and to be frank, have never ever released an album that was not worthwhile. Not only that, what they give us on polycarbonate or vinyl they better with ease when you see them play live. THE PINEAPPLE THIEF has taken the Progressive Rock world by storm, and I have to say, deservedly so.
“It Leads To This” is their sixteenth (!) album and if you are a real fan, you will also have all nine(!!) live recordings they have released on either CD or DVD or both. Oh, and of course all six Eps that have seen the light of day throughout their career. So, THE PINEAPPLE THIEF is not the cheapest band to be besotted with. And of course, they just keep going on where they left off. The opener “Put It Right” is a very laid back piano based piece. The rest of the album is also laid back, but there a more than enough heavy passages and songs to still classify this as Progressive Rock.
Band leader Bruce Soord reminds me of Trent Reznor (NIN), only without the anger issues. He knows exactly what will work within the boundaries he has set himself and acts accordingly. And although I do prefer heavier albums, I can’t help but being mesmerized by the sheer quality that THE PINEAPPLE THIEF is bringing us on “It Leads To This”. I have had this album on repeat through my headphones and every time I do discover little bits of information that escaped my attention the time before.
I do understand that on a site like METAL TEMPLE reviewing “It Leads To This” sounds twofold, but I do assure you, there is something here for a lot of our readers. Let me put it this way, if you love the wide variety of SLEEP TOKEN, and just use their softer half, you will really enjoy THE PINEAPPLE THIEF. That is how this one should be received by the younger audience. For the real Progressive Rock fans, you know what you are getting in to, so don’t hesitate and just go for it. I know for sure that you will not be disappointed.
