THE HIP PRIESTS are a five-piece band from the UK devoted to a love of Punk Rock and those genres that mix well with it. To date, they've released 30 7" singles, two compilations, three EPs and four albums. Highly energetic with infectious grooves, they bring a lack of decorum to a musical style that celebrates exactly that. Roden House Blues will be released on May 5, 2023, via The Sign Records. Punk Rock is alive and well! From the opening notes of "Trojan Horseshit," you get a sense of old-school, hardcore Punk. Another easy to note similarity is the shorter songs geared to pack a quick punch and leave the listener almost stunned at how fast the point can be made. This one took only a minute and twenty-eight seconds.
Even quicker at one minute and nineteen seconds is "Pissed On Power." Said in this way, it's likely they're talking about being drunk on power, and since Punk is all about pointing out the idiocy of the establishment, this makes a lot of sense. The shortest song is followed by the longest, "Can't Abide With Me." Both extremes are catchy as hell. "Sell My Soul" has a quick semi-Techno intro that quickly gets obliterated by another angry riff/rhythm combo. With the speed of the music and a vocal delivery of equal tempo, these guys are in top Punk Rock form. There is a ton of angst and belligerence, two things you should want from this. Punk is not about rainbows and puppies, it's about rebellion and pointing out the stupidity of the ruling class and THE HIP PRIESTS have not forgotten this.
Wrapping this gloriously angry album off is "The Best Revenge," a barn burner that clocks in at just under three minutes. This is one of the best examples of the four singers all building a proper wall of voices to emphasize the message. These guys present themselves as the real deal; pissed off renegades with an axe to grind and the instruments turned up loud enough to make sure you hear what they have to say.
