Dissonance

The D.O.O.D.

Another hurricane in Florida.
October 14, 2024

From the land of the Hurricanes, Florida, we have the fury of the band The D.O.O.D. that stands for "The Distinguished Order of Disobedience" from Sarasota. The band was created in 2004 and released their first full length album in 2018 called Buttercup, their second, Firefly in 2022 and 2 albums in 2024! The first one Playtime In The Apocalipse and now their latest, Dissonance. The Florida gang is very active producing music and this is good to know. In this review, I will remove already the 3 musical interludes on this album “Down The Rabbit Hole”, “Disorder” and “Cut,Cut,Cut” as they are basically introductions, or intervals between songs and some of them don't even have music played. Just some theatrics and special effects that will not add much to your listening experience.

The meat of the bone is actually on the tracks like “Subterfuge” or “The Back Of Hell”. Good Trash Metal with all that sense of urgency delivered like a punch in your face. The singer Brian "Monkeyboy" Amoroso looks like a demon performing. Great delivery and pipes and his voice has a Tom Araya sound mixed with the great Riley Gale from POWERTRIP. However the band is not only Trash. They can do very good Heavy Metal as well as in “The Pentecostal” and on “Parasite 6-4-2” that offers different flavors to the listener with a more somber mood ala BLACK SABBATH. That being said, the band also does a 90 degree turn and tries to be a little more melodic on “2000 Miles” showing some nice high notes from Mokeyboy. The band also has a solid guitar duo in Indiana and Raynus Dood with good riffs and all the crunchiness you expect, however no guitar solos in every song as you can't hear in “Chaos For The Fly” or “Dissonance” despite being good tracks. There should always be space for a piercing guitar solo in my Metal book specially with 2 guitar players. The songs on this album are varied enough not to bother the listener.

“The Well” has a nice vocal melody and changes gear in the arrangement with different tempos offered by the competent drummer Dogbite. With a good and expressive guitar solo, this track became my favourite of the album so far. We go back to crazy speed, crunchiness and relentless riffing on “Slayers Of Gods”, another highlight of the album. Jonzey is responsible for the lower end in the mix as the bass player in the band and she does a nice job. I just wish the bass were more present in the mix and not hidden under the guitar riffs that much. Let the bass shine a little more please. We end our journey with the desperate “Final Girl” that the band gets again out of their shell with a delivery that reminds me of CONVERGE and LINKIN PARK and messes my brain a little. Good work from a solid band that has all the experience and years behind their back to put out a solid album, actually 2 albums in 2024. I will check the previous one released in January 2024 to see where so many different songs come from.
