Ekstasis of Subterranean Currents

Thantorean

This is an evil album in every sense of that word. The band smartly distanced themselves from their peers by choosing a deeper production instead of the overly treble production we often hear in the genre, as well as thick, meaty bass notes that give them album depth. Combined with twisted, wicked vocals, and we get the soundtrack for torture and death.

The band is described as “a chronicle of rabid deeds, dutifully unearthed from accursed crossroads' soil by K.M. (sounds, words) & E. (voice).” Further adding, “wrought from the gulf where light doth wane, and tongues of the underworld sing.” The album has nine songs, and “The Descent” is first. Out of the gate, it has a heavy weight, and some dissonant aggression, but there isn’t that wall of sound…the riffs are discernable. “With Tongues of the Underworld” has a deeper and more cavernous sound, and I love what the thick bass notes bring to the bottom end of this song. “Tranquil Trueness of End” has snippets of melody among the madness, but some of the notes are dissonant. It creates a landscape of torture for me…a place buried deep under the earth where unspeakable atrocities occur.

“De Profundis” uses the infamous “Devil’s Fifth” note pattern made famous by BLACK SABBATH. But it’s twisted into something that is much more nefarious. The lead breaks here are chilling. “To Abyss Sacrosanct” begins with a panache of thick, meaty bass guitar notes that go about as deep as the earth will allow. Spoken words mix in with the harsh vocals, creating what sounds like evil incarnate. “Bound Beneath and Beyond” has a slower grind, as well as more traditional Black Metal elements. The riff has the familiar “one-two” step where it changes key a half step at a time. The title track closes the album, and the sound develops a bit slower, led by the charge of heavy bass notes. What follows from there can best be described as utter hopelessness.
