“Like a Cyborg” is first, and it has nice balance between hardened, choppy riffs and vocal harmonies. Much of the magic comes in the long vocal notes and the melody in the chorus, and the message of AI taking over is not lost on me. “Bullet to a Pharaoh” has a rough mid-tempo riff and an energetic cadence that you can groove along with. It’s the chorus that delivers a smooth and catchy melody, and the lines are memorable. “Gloom” has a slow start, but when that chorus hits, it brings a wave of euphoria with it. Take in the bridge…its harmonies will wash over you and make you come out clean on the other side. “Ending of All” has a very catchy sound out of the gates and is also one that features the strong musicianship of the band, reminding you of their Progressive roots.
“Sinister” is a bit on the darker side, as the title suggests, but remains quite catchy. The riffs are choppy, palm muted at times, and exploring others. In fact, all of the guitar work on the album is outstanding so far. “Perfect World” is more straightforward but still has a lot of energy and excitement to offer the listener. In the verses, it seems tentative, but a key change in the chorus opens up the melody like a sky full of stars on a clear evening. The guitar solo is smoking as well. “Desire Colours N Lust” has a sultry swing and another strong chorus. This is one area in particular that the band has always been one of their strongest suits…a big, catchy chorus. “Black Sound” is a perfect mix of keyboards and guitars, and both vocalists contribute to the sweet harmonies in the song. It takes an unexpected turn close to the half-way mark, as delicate melodies soak in, and man, are they fantastic.
The lengthy title track closes the album, ad it has everything that the band can offer to the consumer…hardened, edgy riffs, backing keyboards, vocals that soar with melody, and guitar solos that will leave you dazzled. TERAMAZE have done it again. One might think that due to their proliferation of albums recently they might get stale, but if you did, you couldn’t be more wrong. With “The Harmony Machine,” they have created a concise collection of songs here that feature their incredible musicianship and strong sense of catchy songwriting in nearly equal doses. What results are a Progressive album where big hooks reign supreme.
