Loss
Tenebrae

Unfortunately, the album’s press pack was in Italian, and I wasn’t able to find much information about the band on the web, so we are going to have to let the music do most of the talking here. The album has nine songs, and “Tetraluce” is first. The opening organ sequence and ominous bell strikes hint at something powerful, and the heavy riff that follows further stamps the feeling. The pace is slow at first, but it does pick up a bit. The vocals are clean and sung in native Italian. “Bet and Die” has a slow Doom pace and sound, but it not without moments of melody or filled out background elements. You can feel the emotion in both the music and the vocals, and meaty bass notes augment the sound.
“Freedom” begins with clean guitar tones, some well done leads, and more meaty bass notes. I hate to have to point this out, but many bands mix the bass in to the point that it can’t be heard, but not TENEBRAE. “Lost” begins with piano notes, some lead guitar, and again more thick bass notes. The riff that follows is both crunchy and weighted. There is also a hasty quality to song, almost as if you are chasing something that keeps getting away. “Epica” begins with more piano notes, and some of the early keys remind me of Dungeon Synth. What follows however is a weighted, urgent sound that is interjected with a good deal of melody. “Anymore” rumbles with more thick bass notes, and more emotion. The harmonized leads are also excellent.
“Unreachable Moon” brings the album to a close, and with a grand exit. The song is powerful, and melodic, and tinged with just enough Doom. Consider the title for a key to the sound…something that is out there but just out of your reach. In fact, that is what much of the album sounds like. The band are talented and have filled out the background of the music with enough qualities to make it sound rich, and full. The album has power, melody, and is carried by a great singer. There is a lot to like here.
