Quan tot s'apagui

Syberia

I have always maintained that instrumental music is harder to write and listen to, because vocals and lyrics aren’t here to guide your way. SYBERIA are masters at creating landscapes that you have never seen before…never experienced before. It’s like a trip through every corner of the universe with your eyes closed and only your imagination guides the way.

From Bandcamp, "The album is a dark, immersive journey through the end of the world — and the Barcelona band's first album written entirely in their native Catalan. Barcelona's instrumental post-rock outfit SYBERIA have carved out a sound that speaks loudly without ever uttering a word. Their music is a collision of cinematic atmospheres, explosive dynamics and guitar-driven emotional heft, the kind that pulls you in slowly before overwhelming you with sheer, deliberate force. What makes SYBERIA compelling is their ability to balance patience with intensity. "Quan tot s'apagui" stands as their darkest and most introspective album to date. It offers a symbolic exploration of the world's end and the passage into nothingness — a sonic narrative where beauty and devastation coexist."

"En la foscor una llum que brilla" is first. The opening piano led tones are absolutely dreadful sounding. The skies then begin to open, and shades of grey and fast moving clouds trail overhead. It isn't without melody, although they are quite somber. "llampecs d'oblit d'uns records en vida" is both firmer and more dangerous, and the darkened sound is thick with bass notes and sounds like a warning to turn back. Tension is what is constant in the song…that feeling that anything can happen and that's it right around the corner. "naixença d'una mort tranquil·la" is firmer slab of weight. Majestic, and powerful tones lead the song forward, as if the beast is moving forward without concern that its opponents are littering it with arrows. Each new layer that is added makes the song hurt that much more, and this is a regal, emotionally charged song.

"Dins la meva ànima la sang em bull..." builds with dark and mysterious layers of electronic to go along with the heavy drum strikes that sound like warning bells. You ask yourself, "where am I?" and "what's out there?" Suck in those expansive melodies…they are absolutely grandiose. "quan me'n vagi no em tanqueu els ulls" is the final song. Clean tones lead to another wide, cavernous sound that seems to be as wide open as the universe itself. Tension builds like it's the band's only job, and they do it so well. It begins to fade, however, and what is left are smooth keyboard melodies and spoken words. I have always maintained that instrumental music is harder to write and listen to, because vocals and lyrics aren't here to guide your way. SYBERIA are masters at creating landscapes that you have never seen before…never experienced before. It's like a trip through every corner of the universe with your eyes closed and only your imagination guides the way.
