From their record label, "Barcelona's instrumental post-rock outfit SYBERIA have carved out a sound that speaks loudly without ever uttering a word. Their music is a collision of cinematic atmospheres, explosive dynamics and guitar-driven emotional heft, the kind that pulls you in slowly before overwhelming you with sheer, deliberate force. "Quan tot s'apagui" stands as their darkest and most introspective album to date. It offers a symbolic exploration of the world's end and the passage into nothingness."
"En la foscor una llum que brilla" is first. There is a lot of tension and atmosphere in the opening few minutes, and the riff that follows is crushing, emotionally. They paint a landscape of grey…of an endless succession of rainy days…the kind that gets in your soul and poisons you from the inside out. There are alternating moments of red hatred and muted melancholy, and the interplay is fascinating. "llampecs d'oblit d'uns records en vida" begins with heavy drum strikes, thick, reverberating bass notes, and an impending sense of immediate dread. It takes real skill for music to speak to you without the addition of vocals, and SYBERIA has a lot to say.
"naixença d'una mort tranquil·la" has another emotionally punishing riff, and it's as if the band holds your tender heart in their hands and begins to squeeze with massive force. Sometimes, they let up just a bit, so you can breathe, and visualize the landscape, which does feature some bright colors at times. "Dins la meva ànima la sang em bull…" is a ten-minute opus, and gives you plenty of time to explore the unknown territory you find yourself thrust into. At first, things seem fairly innocuous, but the band throws curveballs in the form of emotional moments that are akin to a punch square in your gut. The riffs create hardened angles at times, and more introspective thoughts at others.
"quan me'n vagi no em tanqueu els ulls" concludes the story, and that thick fog of dread that coats everything like a steady rain is lifted. At times, it's just enough for you to be able to look around, but they play with your vision like an ever-changing landscape of moving thunderclouds and wind. Sometimes, the level of weight and emotionally crushing tones are so close to overwhelming you, you almost want to stop the music in its tracks. At other times, they beg you to stop and look around, taking in as many things that might tickle your senses as possible. Each layer of this music is just so easy to peel though, and I find more discoveries with each listen.
