Lykke
Sunken

SUKNEN is an Atmospheric Black Metal band hailing from Denmark. "Lykke" is their third full length album. The album has four lengthy songs, and "Din Røst malede Farver i Luften" is first. Somber piano notes lead the charge, followed by a thick Black Metal landscape that begs feelings of sorrow and regret. Although the guitars and vocal screams create a wall of sound, somber melodies remain the focus. Emotions swell as the song advances and then retreat rounding the halfway mark. Depression is replaced with sheer wonder. The sound returns in what can best be described as an explosion in the deep, with blast beat drums in tow. The peace that comes at the end is like a satisfying sunset to me.
"Og det er Lykke" begins with gentle strings and a calm, comforting feeling. The sound that follows is as rich with aggression as it is despondence, and the vocals scream out to the sky. The sound retreats a bit rounding the halfway mark, with a gentler sway, but the vocals remain tortured, and again, the reprieve is even more hearty. "Glædesfærd" enters with a thick guitar structure, still quite somber, and audible bass notes, and the tortured vocals aren't too far behind. They blend together elements of anger with a deep longing that come together like two strangers holding hands, and although much of the anger drops rounding the halfway mark, the heavy emotional impact remains.
"Når Livet går på Hæld" closes the album, and it's as if the band saved all of their emotions for this last song. They overflow like a waterfall saturating something that is already soaking wet, and there are equal parts of rage and acceptance. They push the limits of what can reasonably be held, stretching deep emotions as far as they can take it without breaking. As the anger and pain fade towards the end, you can finally breathe a bit. But, you won't come out of the other side of this catharsis the same way you went into it. I don't believe I've ever heard an album packed with this much emotion. In the moment, it sweeps you away, and after, it leaves you deeply contemplative. That is the very essence of great music.
