Bathed in a Black Sun
Strigoi
STRIGOI is a Death/Doom/Black Metal band formed in the UK in 2018. “Bathed in a Black Sun” is the band’s third full-length release, and it has five songs. The title track is first. It opens with a devastatingly heavy riff, with eerie background noises, and harsh vocals. The drums hit so hard, you could hear them from space. “The Grotesque” is a faster moving song with more traditional Black Metal elements…a thick guitar sound, rolling drums, and heavy bass. There is even some chaotic lead guitar parts. “Beautiful Stigmata” is a puzzling forty seconds of an almost Punk sound, although the bass is super meaty and heavy.
“A Spear of Perfect Grief” has such a weighted bass sound that it could sink deep into the ocean. The main riff is just a bit dissonant, although the band does ride a melody line for a spell. “The Construct of Misery” closes the album…another shorter offering of only a minute-and-a-half in length. Again, the most discernable feature in the song is low the band drops the tuning. It creates such a heavy sound…and where can you go if you are in a Metal band these days? Lower. Essentially, this album was only three songs, because two were under two minutes in length. For me, the best part was that rumbling bass. Although I enjoyed what I heard, I feel the band is capable of more. That first song was a banger…if they can keep that up, they are onto something.
